Increasingly, I’m becoming fairly disheartened with Samuel Alito’s record regarding reproductive rights.
Now some new memos released from 1985 do nothing to quell my fears.
From the Wash Post:
As a Justice Department lawyer in the Reagan administration, Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito Jr. helped devise a legal strategy to persuade the high court to restrict and eventually overturn Roe v. Wade , the historic decision legalizing abortion.
In a memo disclosed yesterday that he wrote...

Well…maybe.
Find out what killed him (or didn’t kill him) and who said it.
And although some on the right would have you believe that the person who said it is possibly leaking military secrets, find out why they’re wrong.
And when you find out that they’re wrong, spread this info around and please link to the post over at Donklephant.

Reports like this make my toes curl.
Do they not realize that actions like these simply create an atmosphere where it’s easier to compare us to Saddam? Couple stuff like this with our torture policy, and you have a recipe for credibility damage.
From the LA Times:
WASHINGTON — As part of an information offensive in Iraq, the U.S. military is secretly paying Iraqi newspapers to publish stories written by American troops in an effort to burnish the image of the U.S. mission in Iraq.
The...

My respect for him grows.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – The United States needs to set milestones for progress, not a firm withdrawal date, before it can leave Iraq, Virginia governor and prospective Democratic presidential candidate Mark Warner said on Monday.
“This Democrat doesn’t think we need to re-fight how we got into (the Iraq war). I think we need to focus more on how to finish it,” Warner said.
“To set an arbitrary deadline or specific date is not appropriate,”...

When you screw up, it’s essential you own up.
Now, all of us know this, but it’s still very hard thing to do. And there’s also a right way to apologize for your indiscretions and a wrong way. Too many people unfortunately (and unwittingly) choose to pick the latter.
Find out who’s done it the right way recently and why I sincerely respect their poignant apology.

And since he’s a suspect…
That’s good riddance?
Federal authorities arrested an Islamic religious leader Friday as they began the process of deporting him for lying about ties to terrorist groups.
Imam Fawaz Damra, the spiritual leader of Ohio’s largest mosque, was convicted in June 2004 of concealing ties to three groups that the U.S. government classifies as terrorist organizations when he applied for U.S. citizenship in 1994.
That conviction was upheld in March, clearing...

In today’s world, being liberal is seen as a bad thing.
Certainly, I don’t agree, but if you’re pushing your philosophy on a high school class, there should be limits and it shouldn’t cross party lines…
BENNINGTON, Vt. –The school superintendent whose district includes Mount Anthony Union High School has labeled “inappropriate” and “irresponsible” an English teacher’s use of liberal statements in a vocabulary quiz.
Bush would be (coherent,...

Check this out…
BAGHDAD, Iraq, Nov. 24 – A suicide car bomb exploded Thursday near an American convoy at the entrance to the main hospital in the volatile town of Mahmudiya, killing at least 30 Iraqis and wounding dozens of others in a burst of fire and shrapnel.
At least 15 other Iraqis died Thursday, including the police commander of Mahmudiya, while 5 American soldiers were reported killed in three separate incidents over the last two days.
Even by the violent standards of this war,...

Well, it wasn’t a vast left-wing media conspiracy after all…
CNN anchor/reporter Daryn Kagan: “I have come back into the control room because we want to explain something to you that happened on this newscast yesterday. During our live coverage of a speech by Vice President Dick Cheney there was a technical malfunction, you’ll see it here.
It involved a switcher, something we call a switcher. It’s a machine that we use to switch between visual elements.
Now, that...

And they have a good reason.
You see, the ad isn’t correct.
The ad says that as an appellate court judge, Alito has “ruled to make it easier for corporations to discriminate … even voted to approve strip search of a 10-year-old girl.” Referring to a document Alito wrote in 1985 while seeking a job in the Reagan administration, it quotes him as saying that “the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion.”
The groups backing the ad include the Alliance...

Last year I watched Control Room, the documentary on the Middle Eastern news provider Aljazeera that Donald Rumsfeld inferred being in the right place at the wrong time (i.e. they’re tipped off by terrorists).
I don’t know about Rumsfeld’s assertions, but one thing is certain after watching the movie: these people are human and fragile, as one of their correspondents died in a bombing attack during the initial leg of the Iraq war.
Now a new British memo has revealed that Bush...

A deft bit of satire starts out with this gem…
1. Some sources suggest the earth is approximately 4.55 billion years old. Others estimate the earth is 6,012 years old. Without favoring one estimate over the other, calculate the likely age of God. Show your work.
Read the rest. So funny!

Much has been written about the ills of torture over at Donklephant, so I figure my first REAL post here should take it up.
Personally, I don’t think those who condone torture as a means to an end, actually realize what that “end” really is. They think it’s actionable intelligence that will keep us safe. However, I think many are now beginning to understand that it could actually put us in greater danger.
Here’s why:

The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding Syria cooperate with the continued investigation into the assassination of Rafik Hariri:
The United States, France and Britain pressed for the resolution following last week’s tough report by the U.N. investigating commission, which implicated top Syrian and Lebanese security officials in the Feb. 14 bombing that killed Rafik Hariri and 20 others. The report also accused Syria of not cooperating fully with the inquiry.
The three co-sponsors...
