Andrew Sullivan sees the Democrats as blowing it on the war issue:
The Democrats, alas, seem hopeless to me. Their ambivalence about the war before and during it makes them seem unreliable stewards of a fight we have no choice but to join. Their flirtation with withdrawal only reinforces this impression. But they do have an opening, if they only had the conviction. If a Democratic candidate emerged who promised to stick to the Iraq war to victory, but conduct it in a more aggresive, ethical and competent...

It’s 1:35 a.m. PST and TMV has just gotten in from a day of driving and performing. He will be up at 5:30 am for another day that entails long drives and shows in two southern California counties.
Today may be one of the ONLY days since he started this site when TMV cannot post AT ALL.
But please keep checking back because our always independent co-bloggers may have some things to say. (TMV’s posts resume Friday)

Look at this face.
Because it is believed to be the face of the “new” Al Qaeda chief in Iraq who, in a clear effort to earn his terrorist stripes and make a big international name for himself, is reportedly taking “credit” for brutally murdering two American GI’s — in keeping with the tradition of the man he replaced, the late, unlamented al-Zarqawi.
Yesterday was a sad day for all Americans (despite the inaccurate and truly execrable suggestion of a top radio...

Over the next few days it’s going to be very difficult for TMV to post as usual. The reason is driving logistics:
For instance, yesterday started with a meeting a school, to talk about TMV’s nephew, then a show at a library in San Diego at 10 a.m. Then a four hour drive to Los Angeles for another show and a three hour drive back. This will be repeated today and tomorrow.
Due to all of this, yours truly may be doing a different form of blogging at times: shorter “pointer posts”...

You have to pause and ask yourself what has happened to American political debate when people can say crap like this and others can welcome it and agreeingly nod their heads, wanting more.
FOOTNOTE: Yours truly does not agree with many of the blogs that want an immediate pullout from Iraq. But the comment linked above is beyond inaccurate. It is truly worthy of utter contempt. Meanwhile, I just heard a talk show host on the left an hour ago claim that people in the Bush administration could easily...

Bad polling news for Hillary Clinton and the concept in general of political dynasties — or national presidential candidate political retreads:
With the presidential election more than two years away, a CNN poll released Monday suggests that nearly half of Americans would “definitely vote against” Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Respondents were asked whether they would “definitely vote for,” “consider voting for,” or “definitely vote against” three...

The battle lines are clearly drawn for what could be one of most closely watched Senate primaries — and races — this year, one that all sides agree could have a huge impact on the Democratic party and how many voters perceive it.
In one corner, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman. In the other, his challenger and “netroots” favorite, challenger Ned Lamont.
The questions: Will Lieberman withdraw from the primary and will he run as an independent. The answer, via the Hartford...

Joseph Nye, writing in The Ripon Society journal, looks at the challenge facing Karen Hughes in terms of “soft power.”
Karen Hughes, the Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy, has a daunting task. The United States spends only a little over a billion dollars a year on public diplomacy to get our message out, about the same as Britain or France though we are five times larger. We spend nearly 500 times more than that on our hard military power.
The U.S. Information Agency (USIA)...

Are U.S. officials tempting fate by giving the green-light to the accident-prone space shuttle? The answer: we’ll soon find out.
CBS News:
NASA Administrator Michael Griffin has cleared the space shutting Discovery for launch on July 1, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr, over-riding warnings from his own chief engineer and top safety officials.
“If we’re going to fly, we need to accept some programmatic risk and get on with it,” Griffin said Saturday.
And, indeed, there...

Is the Dubai company still controlling the ports? If so, it will mean the country was massively misled. It’ll be interesting to see what develops in terms of future news reporting, if this is the case.

MSNBC’s weekend Maury Povich and Connie Chung show said good bye this weekend after tepid ratings — and Connie Chung SANG her goodbye.
It’s a video clip that is sure to be played for many years to come — but she might not want to include it in the clips she presents when she applies for a new job. A MUST VIEW (but music lovers beware…).

In recent months, North Korea has thrown down the gauntlet on the issue of nuclear weapons — and now it is reportedly getting ready to send out a test missile that has the capability of reaching Alaska:
North Korea appears to have completed fueling a long-range ballistic missile, American officials said Sunday, a move that greatly increases the probability that Pyongyang will go ahead with its first important test launch in eight years.
A senior American official said that intelligence from...

A Washington Post piece run in the San Jose Mercury News contains THIS COLLECTION of excerpts from textbooks produced in Saudi Arabia. Here’s the paper’s intro:
The passages below — drawn from the same set of Saudi texts proudly cited in the new 74-page review of curriculum reform being distributed by the Saudi Embassy — are shaping the views of the next generation of Saudis and Muslims worldwide. Unchanged, they will only harden and deepen hatred, intolerance and violence...
