TMV’s Own Posts Will Resume Tomorrow

After driving nearly 3500 miles in 12 days and doing his anti-drug program in his other incarnation in 11 schools throughout southern, central and northern CA, TMV is ill and unable to give you his take on the Plamegate indictments tonight. He will do something tomorrow. These travels and programs were done along with updating this site, working on a writing project, and dealing with some emergencies involving his elderly parents in Florida. Average sleep during all of this was about 3 or 4 hours...

TIME Magazine: An Indictment and Resignation

Lewis Libby is charged with obstruction and perjury and has resigned from his position as Dick Cheney’s chief of staff. Where does the CIA leak investigation go from here? By JEFF CHU

A Resource from NPR

How Grand Juries Work The mystery surrounding grand juries, like the one weighing the CIA leak case, is understandable. What goes on behind the closed doors of a grand jury room for the most part remains a secret. Web Extra: Federal Grand Jury Handbook, Glossary

…discuss what the indictment of Scooter Libby means for the White House, and what key questions remain to be answered.

PBS Online NewsHour with Jim Lehrer

The show I’m watching now isn’t online yet, but here’s some stuff from the website: Vice President’s Chief of Staff Indicted in CIA Leak Case Vice presidential adviser I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby resigned Friday after being indicted on five counts of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury in the CIA leak case. HERE WE GO: Transcripts are usually available within 24 hours of broadcast. Segments broadcast on Fridays are available the following...

Many in Bush’s Cabinet Knew of Plame’s Identity

cross-posted to my blog at Basie.org While the indictment of “Scooter” Libby, chief of staff to the Vice President and assistant to the President, is a monumental event inside Washington, could it be, as some Democrats have suggested, only the tip of the iceberg? It already seems likely that, if Libby’s case goes to trial, Dick Cheney will be called on to testify under oath; other high ranking administration officials might have to as well. In fact, the AP’s Mark Sherman takes...

The DLC Weighs In

From the DLC: BOLDING by Holly DLC | New Dem Dispatch | October 28, 2005 Idea of the Week: Raising the Bar for Public Service This has been a sad week for America. Today’s criminal indictments of a top White House aide, coming on the heels of the dispiriting Miers nomination, may be judged by the chattering classes of Washington as a win, loss, or tie, for one party or another, or for one ideological tendency or another. But in our view, they reflect a woeful trend, not invented but certainly...

Quote Of The Day: Bull Moose On The Harriet Miers Withdrawal

Bull Moose says the score is Bill Kristol 1, George Bush 0 and gives us our Quote of the Day. The President caved into the conservative mob. He let down a lady….. In his moment of need, the President will move far rightward with his new nominee. We now know that the indictments are coming and he needs the conservative posse on his side. This is a profoundly weak President. It is a moment of desperation and the President needs his base energized and not demoralized. He will now throw the base...

Major Bush Donor Indicted

Tom Noe, the major Ohio Republican donor and coin dealer who lost $10-$12 million worth of the state’s rare coin collection, today was indicted on money laundering charges potentially related to the 2004 presidential election. The Toledo Blade has the story. A federal grand jury has indicted Tom Noe, the former Maumee coin dealer suspected of laundering money into President Bush’s reelection campaign, Mr. Noe’s attorney told The Blade today. Jon Richardson said he was called this...

Yay or Nay?

I don’t have many deep thoughts about the Miers withdrawal, mostly because I didn’t have strong feelings about the Miers nomination. I do think this exposes, perhaps more than anything, the weakness of the Bush administration on its right flank, also its vulnerability to cronyism charges. Both, of course, could become important in 2006. But, as to the merits of Miers herself, the question that liberals need to ask is whether to be happy or sad. Spencer Overton, thinks that “Miers...

More on Miers Withdrawal

MOVED TO THE TOP BY HOLLY IN CINCINNATI: Others will likely post here during the day on the Harriet Miers nomination withdrawal, but here’s just a small part of the early reaction: –Red State’s Mike Krempasky: Ok everyone – back to the barracks, let’s get ready to get behind a nominee we can support. (note: unfortunately for Erick – I was late in getting back to him with an approval of a RS editorial calling for Ms. Miers to withdraw her nomination. It ought to...

NPR: Miers has Withdrawn

Listening to the radio – NPR says that Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination to SCOTUS.

Ordinary People

Suppose you were standing in line at McDonalds and some idiot with an agenda blew you up. That’s what happened to these ordinary people in Hadera, Israel yesterday. Five people who only wanted lunch were blown away. Israelis, Jewish and Muslim, old men and old ladies, native-born and immigrants. No wonder the Sephardim/Mizrachim (Jews born in Arab countries or descended from those who were) hate those Arabs who cannot accommodate themselves to the existence (and success) of the State of Israel.

More Ominous Signs For Harriet Miers’ Supreme Court Bid

The storm clouds hovering over Harriet Miers’ nomination to the Supreme Court are now beginning to resemble a hurricane. Two bad developments for Miers: (1) Is this the final nail in the Miers nomination coffin? (2) And now Miers has lost the support of top conservative blogger Ed Morrissey, aka Captain Ed, who defended her nomination even though he didn’t like it, on the grounds that he didn’t want to hurt the party. He made it abundantly clear that he thought it was a poor choice...

CIA Leak Indictments — And Political Fallout — Expected Soon

Yesterday was the day when the other shoe was supposed to drop in the Plamegate CIA leak case that some predict could shake the Bush administration to its foundation if some key officials are indicted. It didn’t drop….but there was plenty of legal activity in this case…and it could drop with a big kaboom later today when some analysts predict the Special Prosecutor will make a decision, most likely an announcement…and the political fallout will begin. For instance, the Washington...

White House Demands The Onion Stop Using Presidential Seal

Is it our imagination, or are there a few things going on in Washington that mean the Bush administration shouldn’t be focused on things such as this: WASHINGTON (Reuters) — The White House is not amused by The Onion, a newspaper that often spoofs the Bush administration, and has asked it to stop using the presidential seal on its Web site. The seal was still on the Web site www.theonion.com on Tuesday at the spot where President George W. Bush’s weekly radio address is parodied. With...

Who’s Laughing Now?

Everybody said I was crazy when I claimed the Democrats should run on corruption in 2006. They said that America didn’t care about corruption, that it would be overshadowed by Iraq or the GWOT or the economy, and that I was engaging in a fool’s errand. I would love for them to explain this poll data. Vindication, sweet vindication!
