Dale Eisman on Virginia Gubernatorial Rematch: Will 2009 reflect past trends or overturn them?
Barack Obama owes his presidency in part to his campaign’s mastery of the internet. A corps of online Obama enthusiasts helped him identify and mobilize previously-hidden groups of voters–particularly those under 30–and build an historic fundraising apparatus. In much of the country, Republicans were left with a clear majority only among older and rural voters, those least likely to have...

Between sex scandals and celebrity deaths, let us not forget the citizens of Iran. Suffering does not go away when we do not see it.
New York Times: In Tehran, a Mood of Melancholy Descends — TEHRAN — An eerie stillness has settled over this normally frenetic city. In more settled times, the streets are clogged with honking cars and cranky commuters grousing about the lack of decent parking. — But on Saturday, few cars and relatively few people were on the streets….

The New York Times:
The World Health Organization has told its member nations it is declaring a swine flu pandemic — the first global flu epidemic in 41 years, news services reported.
The move came after an emergency meeting with flu experts here that was convened after a sharp rise in cases in Australia, which reported 1,224 cases on Wednesday, and rising numbers in Britain, Japan and elsewhere.
In a statement sent to member countries, the W.H.O. said it decided to raise the pandemic alert level...

Alan I. Abramowitz on Who’s Afraid of Big Government? Not Us
Barack Obama has been pulling the wool over the eyes of the American people. At least that’s what some conservative pundits are claiming. Despite his current popularity, commentators such as Michael Barone, Dick Morris, and Karl Rove are predicting that Mr. Obama’s approval ratings will come crashing down to earth once the public understands what he’s really up to: dramatically expanding the role of government in...

Alan I. Abramowitz on Back to the Future for Obama:
Comparing the 2004 and 2008 Presidential Elections
Barack Obama’s victory in the 2008 presidential election represented one of the most dramatic shifts in political power in American history. In terms of both style and substance, the contrast between Obama and George W. Bush is perhaps as great as that between any incoming and outgoing presidents in the modern era. Yet the historic nature of this election should not blind us to the high degree...

Barbara A. Perry on Supremely Representative: Should the Nation’s Highest Court Look Like America?
The U.S. Constitution is utterly silent on qualifications for members of the federal judiciary. Theoretically, a justice does not even have to be a lawyer, but, in practice, all 110 justices in the Supreme Court’s 220-year history have been attorneys. With no constitutionally mandated selection criteria, presidents have been free to determine the standards by which they choose nominees....

Dahlia Lithwick on Why Do We Talk About Judges This Way?
Nobody in America believes the judicial confirmation system works. Not the senators who eat up precious questioning time with windy speeches about pet projects back home; not the interest groups who scour every sordid instant of a nominee’s background for evidence that they are unfit for the bench; and not the American public, whose experiences of constitutional interpretation and judicial philosophy are reduced in a few days on C-SPAN...

Rhodes Cook on FOR GOP’S SAKE, TEXAS BETTER NOT SECEDE
Of all the jaw-dropping comments made by politicians this year, the one that takes top prize was not uttered in the nation’s capital but deep in the heart of Texas. There, in conjunction with a tax day “tea party,” Republican Gov. Rick Perry floated the idea of his huge state along the Mexican border seceding from the Union.
As explanation, Perry declared that “we’ve got a great Union. There’s absolutely...

Larry J. Sabato, Isaac Wood, and Paul Wiley on HOT HOUSE 2010: The Upcoming Contests for the U.S. House of Representatives
We are barely into the two-year term for the current House of Representatives, but you can be sure that the 2010 contests have already begun. That is especially true for members of the House who are in two-party competitive districts. For them, it is a permanent campaign.
Relatively few incumbents have challengers out-and-about already. So unlike our recent profiles of 2010...

In a decision which will draw fire from all sides, the California Supreme Court has chosen to split the baby. Unlike King Solomon’s challenge to the two prostitutes [1 Kings 3:16-28], this choice is not courageous and may not even be wise.

Larry J. Sabato on PRESIDENCY 2012: THE INVISIBLE PRIMARY BEGINS
We at the Crystal Ball must beg your forgiveness. With fewer than 1,300 days left until the next general election for President, we have failed to offer a single analysis of this historic upcoming battle. With humility, and hoping for mercy, we submit this first update on 2012.
The start of the nomination battle is even closer, of course. The two major parties are fiddling with their primary and caucus calendars again, probably in...

CNN: American captain rescued, pirates killed, U.S. official says
The captain of the Maersk Alabama was freed Sunday after being held captive since Wednesday by pirates off the coast of Somalia, a senior U.S. official with knowledge of the situation told CNN.
The official said Capt. Richard Phillips is uninjured and in good condition, and that three of the four pirates were killed. The fourth pirate is in custody. Phillips was taken aboard the USS Bainbridge, a nearby naval warship.

I posted yesterday about the Italian Earthquake. Here is an update.
BBC: Death toll rises in Italy quake
At least 207 people have been killed by Monday’s earthquake in central Italy, with 100 residents critically injured, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi says.
He said 150 people had been rescued alive so far, and the operation would continue for a further 48 hours and involve 7,000 rescuers.
About 1,000 people were injured and 17,000 were left homeless following the pre-dawn quake in the...

Emergency crews have reportedly pulled 60 people alive from the rubble.
Survivors are being housed in hotels or a tent city which has been erected in the medieval hill city.

Rhodes Cook on CALIFORNIA: THE KEY TO THE ELECTORAL LOCK
California may be the Golden State, but it has been a while since people have called it that without a trace of sarcasm. With its double digit unemployment rate, difficult to balance budget, and crumbling infrastructure, California these days is anything but golden.
That is, with the exception of its mother lode of electoral votes. Since 1972, California has possessed more than any other state, and is certain to maintain the number one spot...
