This very ugly cartoon was drawn in response to Jacksonville police complaining that the local culture of not-snitching, reinforced by rap music is making it difficult for them to fight crime. It’s causing a big fuss. People are very upset with Jacksonville.com (FL Times-Union) for running it and the local NAACP got on the phones and forced the editorial editor to apologize for what they called “racist.” Jacksonville.com: Was ‘no-snitch’ cartoon racist? Editorial editor...

(I still can’t bring myself to post a real dog fighting pic because they are too gross. This will have to do).
In his Washington Post article, Playing to Wrong Crowd, Mark Maske makes a good point about misplaced loyalties and the role it played in Michael Vick’s undoing. The choice of staying with “your boys” or lifting yourself up, is a choice that many black athletes have to make and too many are making the wrong one. It’s not exclusive to sports. It’s a choice...

The Michael Vick story isn’t a political one, but it relates to racial politics in that a tactic used by those who want to defend him is often used when discussing political and social issues within the black community and it is a tactic that prevents our community from being honest with each other and finding solutions to our problems; especially those problems most affecting black males.
I was reluctant to blog about the whole affair because it’s just sick. Dog fighting is a felony...

I’ve been following this back and forth over Ken Burn’s new WWII documentary between Ken and some (not all) Hispanic groups who were upset that their contributions weren’t included. After hearing their complaints, Ken gave in and offered to add shorts that would be spread throughout the series, but they wanted more. He took the offer back and they put together protest groups and put up websites labeling him a racist. Now, it looks like he is giving in again. Ken Burns and the Old...

It was encouraging to read this story, Blacks in Fairfax, Montgomery Outdo U.S. Peers in AP, in the WAPO today. Black high school students in both Montgomery(MD) and Fairfax(VA) counties are excelling in AP (Advanced Placement) tests. This is what I wanted to hear after the Post conducted a survey showing that more black students in this area are going for AP classes than ever. Participation in this area has doubled in 10 years. Not only are they doing better than most black students in highly black...

I understand what President Clinton was trying to do with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but I disagreed with it then and I still do. We’ve all heard stories about people getting kicked out of the military for being gay despite completely honorable records and substantial skills. Did you think that was unfair? I do. Now, if that person were imposing his/her sexuality onto others who weren’t interested, that is another thing. However, there should be no different rule for homosexuals...

The argument of who deserves Affirmative Action and who doesn’t is raised again in Eugene Robinson’s column on Illinois Senator Barack Obama. He’s asking the question: “Should Obama’s daughters benefit from AA when they apply to college?’ Eugene Robinson – A Question Of Race Vs. Class – washingtonpost.com. In my opinion, absolutely not.
I’ve been clear on my belief that although racism still exist (you’d have to be dead not to believe it)...
