Section 60: Arlington

For those who don’t know, section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery is where Iraq and Afghanistan war dead are laid to rest. HBO has produced a documentary about Section 60, and it is both heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. It is a must see for everyone, and leave the politics at the door.

Unemployment Benefits: How Long Is Too Long ??

Let me begin by stating the obvious fact that we all feel for those who are unemployed and especially for those who have families. It’s a terrible economy right now and people are hurting. But with the latest call for extending unemployment benefits from 99 weeks to 120 weeks (the report I heard on CNN said 21 more weeks) I think we have to start asking how long is too long ? I think it’s fair to say that those now calling for 21 more weeks would be calling for yet another extension in...

Unreal Reaction To Terror Plot

Now let me make it clear from the start that I do NOT think these comments reflect the views of even a small part of the left or the readership at the Huffington Post. Nor do I have issue with those who are simply concerned about how far government agents go in terms of entrapment issues. However when you read a number of the threads you’ve got people actually defending the would be bomber as innocent. I’m not sure what they would allow the police to do in capturing a criminal since they...

RIP Leslie Nielsen

He has died at the age of 84

Small Town Iowa Acceptance

If I were to ask for the least likely place to accept a gay black man in a position of power some of you might very well cite a small midwestern town. Well you’d be wrong

Random Acts Of Culture

I’ve written about this before but I had to post again. The Knight Foundation is an organization which, among other things, seeks to promote the arts. To quote from the web site Knight Foundation invests in artistic excellence, funding arts projects that engage the Knight resident communities in collective cultural experiences. We look for innovative, high-quality ideas. Our grantees represent both emerging artists and organizations and the oldest and most venerable institutions. The projects...

Happy Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaskgiving

I try to post it every year, it’s such a classic Oh my God they’re TURKEYS !! For those of you just joining us the Pinedale shopping mall has been bombed by live turkeys ! The full episode can be seen at Hulu

Don’t Forget To Give Thanks For Those Who Serve

As we gather with our loved ones we should not forget those who we must always be thankful for The men and women of our Armed Services. Many of whom cannot celebrate with their families today. May God Bless Them All. More videos can be found here

Tom DeLay Found Guilty

Word just in that former Congressman Tom DeLay (R) is guilty of money laundering and conspiracy to money launder. He could face up to seven years in prison on the charges. Personally I always felt he was probably guilty and the jury seems to have agreed. However, I am sure there will be lots of partisan reaction to this, which is sort of sad. Some on the left will likely paint all Republicans with this while others on the right will declare it a farce or partisan conviction. And of course if it were...

Random Acts Of Culture

I think this is just wonderful. A foundation dedicated to the proposition of bringing random acts of culture to people around the country. This was an event in Philadelphia You can find more examples here

North Korea Reveals Massive Nuclear Plant

Just to make your weekend a bit less secure, the insane leaders of North Korea have an even bigger resource for nuclear weapons.

Federal Express Loses Package From Dying Woman

This story is just beyond sad and outrageous. A dying woman sends a package to a favorite nephew and Federal Express manages to lose the package, does nothing to tell the recipient that the item has been damaged and leaves them in the lurch. Hopefully Federal Express will fix things for the future.

Medal Of Honor Awarded

I’d write more about this brave soldier but the WSJ did a fine job on it’s own.

Rangel Guilty

A House Ethics committee has found veteran Congresscritter Charles Rangel guilty of 11 ethics charges. The committee will now decide what punishment to commend to the full House with most expecting a reprimand or censure instead of expulsion. Readers are cautioned to wear sunglasses before clicking the link as the blindingly obvious can be dangerous to view without proper protection.

A Sacred Day On Sacred Ground

My Veterans Day post is obviously a bit late this year but there is a reason for that. This past week a family member and I had to take a quick trip to Virginia for a memorial service. We flew out Tuesday and attended the memorial on Wednesday with our return flight on Thursday. Because of the way DC to California flight schedules work we ended up with a flight leaving at about 6pm on Thursday, which meant we had some free time for the day, because we did not need to be at the airport until around...

Right Wing Rag Calls On Obama To Not Run For Re-Election

One of those right wing rags has called on President Obama to pledge he will not run for re-election in 2012. Oh wait… it’s the Washington Post.

Voices Of Liberty Sing

After a lot of partisan wrangling the last few months (and the last week in particular) I thought it would be nice to celebrate America. For those who are not Disneyphiles, the Voices of Liberty are a spectacular A Capella group that performs at Walt Disney World. All of their performances are good but this one is over the top

Awesome Video

Absolutely amazing

Keith Olbermann Suspended (could this mean fired?)

Love him or hate him it looks like you won’t have Keith Olbermann to kick around anymore. He has been ‘suspended indefinitely without pay’ for violating network ethics rules about making campaign donations to candidates. Keith made donations to Arizona Congresscritters Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords and Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway (who sadly lost to Rand Paul). Network policy at NBC prohibits any donations without prior approval. Although he has not officially been...

Michelle Bachmann Is An Idiot (And The Sky Is Blue)

Now she’s claiming the Obama overseas trip will cost 200 million a day Just for reference the the war in Afghanistan is costing roughly 190 million a day. So she’s claiming the trip will cost more than all the troops in Afghanistan. Idiotic.

Couple Gives Away Lottery Win

Given how amazingly generous and kind this story is, let’s see if we can enjoy it without someone raising a partisan issue. Nice break from the election nonsense.

Sulu Rocks !

Way to go Mr. Takei !!

Some Good News For Democrats

After the general thumping they took last night I suspect our Democratic readers could use some good news. It may not be much of a comfort but based on some number crunching by yours truly I suspect that most of the remaining races will fall to the Democrats. There are currently five Governors races that most agencies have not called: Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota Oregon and Vermont. In Vermont it’s just a technicality as the state has a majority vote rule. If nobody gets 50% of the vote...
