It seems that many in Pakistan are convinced that with relations with the U.S. souring, closer ties with China are the answer to Pakistan’s troubles. According to this editorial from Pakistan’s Frontier Post, whereas the United States tends to use Pakistan when its in Washington’s interests and then treat it like ‘garbage,’ China has always been an ‘all-weather friend.’
The Frontier Post editorial says in part:
With Americans haughtily boxing Pakistan into a corner, and their Western allies subtly working toward the same end, China has again offered a heartening voice to Pakistan, just as it has whenever our country has found itself in a distressful predicament.
In a straightforward talk, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jibao lauded Pakistan’s contributions to the war against terrorism, and urged the United States to acknowledge this and respect this country’s sovereignty. Of course, this hasn’t gone down well with Washington’s movers and shakers. It is has drawn sniggers from their media and think tank mouthpieces. But then just as their bandmasters, these drummers want everyone else in the world to love who they love, hate who they hate, condemn whom they condemn and eulogize who they eulogize.
“And since they’ve castigated Pakistan as an untrustworthy partner in the anti-terrorism campaign, they expect all others to revile and abuse Pakistan as well. The Chinese have made it clear they’ll have none of it and will speak their minds honestly and loudly, which their premier has so thankfully done.
The Americans are making much about asking why for so long, Osama remained ensconced and uncaught in his Abbottabad hideout. This certainly is intriguing. Indeed, it’s as intriguing as the way the September 11 hijackers received training in U.S. aviation academies without being caught by any of the two dozen American intelligence agencies, even as the terrorists and their co-conspirators plotted strikes in Europe – who also went undetected, despite the close rapport of the Western spy services and America’s CIA.
