For much of the world, this is New Year’s Eve and is now officially 2012… and just this:
My friend Rigoberta Menchu Tum, of the Mayan K’iche tribe, and Nobel peace prize winner, says of 2012, it marks the ending of an era, and beginning of a new 40 year period of an unprecedented time to bring all strength and goodness into the world. Many of us will live and give through some part or all of this next 40 years. Now would be the time to not hold back, but to pour good into our world, especially for others within our reach.
I’ve written here about the dark interpretations of this time of the Mayan calender. Jose Arguelles, of the Aztec calendar phenom and the ‘harmonic convergence’ worldwide gatherings was on my doctoral committee and we’d many long conversations about his ideas about the Nahua calendar. Too, I’m a lifelong student of various ideas about the tribal calendars of Mezo-America from having traveled early in life in the 1960s amongst the decendents of those tribal groups, Nahua ( Aztec), Maya and Inkan… but also, many many other subgroups throughout the Americas, such as the Lacondon and the Santo Domingo de los Colorado.
Just this too, I find a peaceful people behind the poetry and mythos of much of Mezo-America. I also find that writers from earlier centuries, including conquistadores who invaded, often took the gentle mythos of the peoples and turned it/interpreted it/ overlaid it with their own version of mythos they already followed in their own global war culture and emphatic religious ideal based on bloody, retribution stories…these inserted into the mezo-American cultures far more than existed in the cultures prior.
It is like all mythos and stories of spirit and eternity, spiritual, religious and otherwise… that while it is true that there are those in the world who say and do evil to human beings, animals and our lands and waters and skies, there are in the main also the people who are rooted solidly, and in the majority, in wise heart and true soul… and if forgetful of such, are ever rowing back to center with sincere effort again, daily. There’s the ticket to ride forward to create anew, and also to create from the ruins.
For myself, I hope to continue in the little red rowboat of the heart, pulling away at the oars in more ways than one… and know that whatever portion of this next 40 years I may remain alive in, I will be pulling forward with all my might, as usual, and at other times find myself bewildered for a moment by the map until I reorient to north star,
and that I will see YOU, out there on the waters, in your heart vessels too, and we will signal each other with our flares, to let one another know, that we are here, together, and on our ways to help, heal and hold the things that matter on earth… the troth of the wise soul: to shelter, protect and nurture those beings, things, ideas, events, pathways that cannot be allowed to perish from this earth.
Blessed New Year … and though we all move in different ways, never fear, for we are all traveling along together toward our callings, toward real action on earth, each in our own ways…
with kindest regards,
dr.e
