Pennsylvania is in the midst of a real time test of Republican vice presidential candidate and U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan’s budget, a budget the right loves so very much and plan on instituting nationally if they win big in the 2012 elections. The Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett seems to be giving this everything to the rich and the heck with the other guy approach a real test.
So how is this working out for Governor Corbett?
Not very well, according to some polls. Governor Corbett has become so deeply unpopular that in my opinion he may single handedly loose Pennsylvania for Romney-Ryan in November. His approval rating is so bad – now around 30% according to one poll – Republicans don’t even seem to want to be tied to him, a very unusual situation for a Republican governor these days.
One big reason for his unpopularity is his budget. Here’s a quote about this from Philadelphia’s City Paper. The link to the full story is below.
” …The cut-happy governor, who has delivered low taxes for gas drillers and a multi-billion-dollar tax subsidy for Shell, could draw unfavorable comparisons to Romney, who has been criticized for not releasing old tax returns and for his work at private equity firm Bain Capital. Ryan’s presence on the ticket won’t help: His proposed huge tax breaks for the wealthy and cuts to the safety net seem like the national embodiment of Corbett’s state-level agenda…”
There are a lot of reasons the governor is so unpopular, including accusations that when as the state’s Attorney General he didn’t aggressively investigate convicted child sexual abuser Jerry Sandusky. But my own pick as the big reason he has disgusted so many people is his consistently callous treatment of poor Pennsylvanians while helping out the really rich.
