It seems that the first conversation between Webb and Bush didn’t exactly go [over] smoothly:
At a private reception held at the White House with newly elected lawmakers shortly after the election, Bush asked Webb how his son, a Marine lance corporal serving in Iraq, was doing.
Webb responded that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, said a person who heard about the exchange from Webb.
“I didn’t ask you that, I asked how he’s doing, Bush retorted, according to the source.
Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didn’t. It’s safe to say, however, that Bush and Webb won’t be taking any overseas trips together anytime soon.
Suggested conversation next time they meet:
Bush Hello Mr. Webb. Congratulations with your victory.
Webb Thank you Mr. President.
Bush You organized a terrific campaign. I am aware of the fact that we disagree on quite a lot but I hope that we can try to find common ground as much as possible from now on.
Webb I agree completely with that Sir. It’s in the interest of our nation to do so.
Bush Yes I agree. How is your son doing if I may ask?
Webb My son is fine as far as his present circumstances allow it that is. He loves the military and is proud of what he’s doing. As are his mother and I. We miss him a lot and want him to come home.
Bush Glad to hear that he is doing fine and I understand that you worry a lot about him. It’s often more difficult for those who stay behind than for those who go away to do the actual fighting. For what it’s worth, I am proud of your son and grateful for what he’s doing in Iraq.
Webb Thank you Mr. President.
Civilized behavior… it’s not that difficult.
UPDATE (and moved up)
The Washington Post has more information about the original conversation:
“How’s your boy?” Bush asked, referring to Webb’s son, a Marine serving in Iraq.
“I’d like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President,” Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.
“That’s not what I asked you,” Bush said. “How’s your boy?”
“That’s between me and my boy, Mr. President,” Webb said coldly, ending the conversation on the State Floor of the East Wing of the White House.
What a great example of professional conduct, is it not?
