It’s “Silly Wednesday.” (Just made that up)
As I was reading some of the campaign magniloquence of our Republican friends, a silly thought occurred.
As our society — especially the Democratic side of it — finally moves beyond race, gender, sexual orientation etc., just think how wonderful the prospects look for the Democratic Party to continue to win presidential elections and make other political inroads.
I say, “continue” because America has already elected its first black President, a Democrat, twice.
We have also had our first and only Catholic president — a Democrat.
Americans, that is Democratic America plus a number of fair-minded Republicans and Independents, now appear ready, perhaps hungry, to elect the first woman president.
Where else could she come from other than from the Democratic fold, a fold that has done so much to break that glass ceiling and has not declared war on its women.
As more barriers, obstacles and roadblocks come down, and more minorities dare to aspire for that highest office, which Party will be ready to support them in their quest? Democrats, of course, with a little help from a number of unprejudiced Republicans and Independents.
Can you see the Republican Party nominating for President a woman, a gay or lesbian, a Latino, a Native American, a Jew, perhaps another black — someday “even” a Muslim?
How about — if we ever change the Constitution — an immigrant?
So figure, if Democrats nominate a minority candidate — capable in every respect — for each of the next five or six elections and hope for a couple of reelections here and there (even this has now been done), we are looking at a 40-year Democratic roll.
That is, unless Republicans see the light and start attracting minorities instead of attacking them, appealing to them instead of appalling them.
Should that happen and I am still around, I would more than welcome a Republican landslide.
Now some may scream “reverse discrimination” or the dreaded “affirmative action” words. OK, let’s slip a capable, white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant male somewhere in between all those minorities. The Democratic Party has a few of “them,” too — extremely capable and ready to knock the socks off any “similar” Republican candidate.
Satire? Some.
Silly? Maybe.
Dreaming? Maybe not.
Impossible? Absolutely not!
Just thought I’d jot this down before my moment of silly lucidity (lunacy?) disappears.
No comments, please. No time to read all those kudos — getting ready to dream some more.
But, hey, just think of the day when posts like this wouldn’t have to be tagged “satire,” or called “silly.”
