I hope Americans have had enough of this fearmongering and the pendulum can swing back the other way. If not, I hope President Hillary or Edwards or Obama declares them all enemy combatants and ships them off to Gitmo. Maybe only then can the Bush faithful wake up to how dangerous it is to grant these unconstitutional powers to a partisan administration without checks and balances. Even when the government is functioning in a rational, competent manner, this is too much freedom to give up. When it is not functioning competently, like the Bush administration, it is foolish to trade a little irrational fear for the loss of our precious liberty. We have to be the beacon of light in the world, or how can we deem ourselves morally fit to be a superpower that sets the example for less democratic societies. I have long felt that we have been striving to bring democracy to the Middle East, while simultaneously our society is becoming less democratic here. Growing inequality , government infringement on civil rights and our privacy , plus a shrinking middle class have diminished our greatness. I’m in total agreement, MvdG.
