You make some valid points. That said, there’s also a double standard in American society. Mulitant Muslims are demonized for being: 1) military, 2) Non-Christian, and usually, 3) non-white. I’d argue that historically, the Roman Catholic church and Christian fundamentalists have been guiltier of inhibiting progress. For instance, the Roman Catholic Church has opposed all major scientific breakthroughs. And George W. Bush has made 1 GD veto, to appease wingnut Christians.

The problem I see with moderate muslims is there either aren’t very many of them(in the middle east where they are needed the most), or they wield no politcal clout or influence with the radicals. Even if the muslim world were 95% moderate, if all the players are radicals where still in this mess. The face of Islam like it or not is represented by the Osama’s, the Ahmadinejad’s, Sharia, etc…

I tend to agree with “Dr. Don Key” and his assertions. However I would also add the violent fundamentalist Jew as well, right along with any other violent fundamentalist religious or cultural organizations or individuals.

I would like to ask these Moderate Muslims if they are willing to kill Muslims as well as anybody else for the United States? This is a requirement for national defense. Reasoning may become vague and innocent deaths may occur intentionally or inadvertently. Still willing?

I would also like to ask Christians and Jews out there a loyalty question: “In the hypothetical event that nuclear missiles were located in Rome, Israel and Mecca, about to launch on the United States, would you push the button to destroy those places in defense of the United States?”

I would and that is the loyalty that I believe most Americans require of all of you. Period.

I highly recommend the flick “The Message.” It stars Anthony Quinn and it’s about the birth of Islam. Before seeing the film, I had a cursory knowledge about Islam’s beginnings. But after seeing the film, it’s very apparent that the small group of Muslim extremists have nothing to do with true Islam, according to Mohammad’s vision. In the same way, the Christian Coalition has nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus. Most Amercians are ensconced in Judeo-Chritian ideology, which is reinforced by the mass media. As you stated, ignorance breeds fear. Also, ignorance is bliss. The result? On Jon Stewart, they showed a clip of some ignoramus Con asking Ellison, the first Muslim in Congress, to assure him that he wasn’t an extremist. Er, you simply don’t overgeneralize. Timothy McVeigh and Ted Bundy both had ties to the Republican party. Does that mean that all Republicans are rightwing-extremists? Well, some aren’t. The bottom line is that people have to start reading more and making the New Republic a reality. In the spirit of Dick Cheney debasing “Fahrenheit 9-11″ without seeing it, ignorance is bliss for most Republicans.

The term (as I’ve seen it widely used) is intended to distinguish between the extremists or terrorists (and those who support them), and the many millions of ordinary Muslim people going about their lives — who are not terrorists (and do not support them).

Interestingly — I just went to Ruth’s site, and she’s posted an entry asking other Muslims to join her in a thread to publicly condemn terror. (link)

For Muslims living in the West, mainly I think they just need to do MORE of what this woman is doing (opening the dialogue, condemning the extremists). They can also work to make sure that true moderates are in positions as spokespeople (though my understanding is that this is difficult since there isn’t a hierarchy)

For moderate Muslims in Islamic majority countries, there is one big word they need to learn: RECIPROCITY.
