As moderates, our primary hopes lie in the inability of either of the extremes, and by that I mean the Democrats and Republicans, to secure their particular agenda carte blanche. While it would be great if politicians would agree to work together to create high-quality solutions for the health and welfare of our nation based on reason, facts and the best interests of all, we moderates are not that naive. So the next best thing is for the two polar opposites to fight one another so that nothing whatsoever actually gets done. Perhaps a few innocuous things will make it through. Did you know, for example, that this is apparently National Oatmeal month. But nothing that will dramatically change our way of life.
We have all come to realize that the primary job of a member of Congress, especially as to the Representatives, is to secure re-election. So the most important thing is to secure some earmarks for your District in the budgeting process and pontificate as loudly as possible about those things you think your voters care about. Read the Constitution out loud, probably in Olde English so no one listens too closely, but everyone believes you are a true American patriot. The fact that most of the things promised are never actually resolved, is someone else’s fault. Those darn “inside-the-beltway” Washington politicians are to blame.
As the new Congress settles in and the football season is winding down, I am looking forward to the games. Well at least until March Madness . . . .
