Jeb Bush: “No tengo Futuro”

Reuters reports that Jeb Bush believes that he has no future in politics:

The shadow of President Bush seemed to loom large over his younger brother on Wednesday, as the outgoing Florida governor ruled out any plans to return to elected office.

“No tengo futuro (I have no future),” Jeb Bush told Spanish-language reporters in Miami, when asked about any possible political ambitions after he steps down next month.

The popular, two-term governor has often been touted as a savvy politician with a good chance of following both his brother and father, George H.W. Bush, into the White House.

But the unpopularity and dismal job-approval ratings of his brother may have scuttled any plans Jeb Bush may have had for a future in politics after running one of America’s most crucial swing states for the past eight years.

Sam Brownback – who considers himself to be a ‘jeb-conservative’(?) – commented on it:

In a backhanded slap at President Bush, Brownback cited “a heritage issue” as one factor currently weighing against a Jeb Bush presidency.

That’s quite an, umh, overly subjective interpretation of Brownback’s words of course. He could also simply mean that Americans tend to oppose dynasties in general. America isn’t a Monarchy, but having a father as President, his son, and later another son, comes close to just that.

Now, if Reuters would have stated this without interpreting Brownback’s words in such an, again, overly subjective manner, it would have been a good point of course. Jeb Bush can forget about being President of the US. Not just because Americans dislike Dynasties, but also because of his brother’s legacy, which isn’t exactly positive right now.

Jeb was just replaced as governor with someone who is reaching out to build bi-partisan collaboration.
Jeb is the old model and the new guy is hopefully the new paradigm.

I was on Shaun’s internet talk show last night and our friend from Moderate Voters was on as well. We talked about this. He said he has heard reports that Jeb’s wife really isn’t interested in him running and that’s part of the problem. The other is, as a BRAND NAME the Bush name is at present where Taco Bell was a few weeks ago. Until the time when the Bush name is declared healthy politically, Jeb doesn’t have a national future unless he runs for Senate. Remember that Jeb was the one the Dad felt would be next …run and be elected in Florida and then perhaps seek higher office. To everyone’s surprise, GWB, who many felt didn’t have a real chance, won in Texas and Jeb lost in Florida. So then GWB got the experience and national spotlight. I personally think there are two factors in this a)the Bush name being unhelpful right now as a brand name and “Bush exhaustion” and b)whatever his wife is telling him about not wanting him to run in a national campaign. I don’t think Jeb would have a chance in 2008. BUT if you talk to people in Florida, he was a popular governor (just look at the polls) and has a totally different style from his brother. It’s often said that he is most like his dad; and GWB is most like his mom.

All the same, I feel sort of bad for him and his old man. Jeb was the one who was supposed to make it to the presidency -not 43. He’s dead in the water because of his brother’s bone-headed leadership, not his own history as governor of Florida. Of course doubts about his role and that of Katherine Harris will always haunt us lefties, who think Gore deserved to win.

  4. Andrew says:

Ain’t this why Daddy Bush got all choked up a little while ago? ‘Cause the wrong boy won the Presidency?

    We don’t need another divider.

  6. Rudi says:

I might of been able to vote for Jeb, he sems more engaged and brighter than his brother. His wife doesn’t fit the CC Stepford model, like Jim Webb’s wife. This Democrat never voted for W and sees no future for Jeb because of his unworthy brother.

  7. Talcott says:

“Katherine Harris will always haunt us lefties, who think Gore deserved to win.”-KR

Not only did he win, but in hindsight our nation would be vastly better off, if SCOTUS hadn’t screwed us.
