Let me begin by stating the obvious fact that we all feel for those who are unemployed and especially for those who have families. It’s a terrible economy right now and people are hurting.
But with the latest call for extending unemployment benefits from 99 weeks to 120 weeks (the report I heard on CNN said 21 more weeks) I think we have to start asking how long is too long ?
I think it’s fair to say that those now calling for 21 more weeks would be calling for yet another extension in about 15 weeks or so.
So how long is it before we just cannot afford it anymore ?
3 years ? 4 ? 5 ?
I’m not trying to belittle what people are going through, as I said it’s a very tough situation to be in (indeed as a self-employed person I don’t qualify for unemployment so I’m already at 99 weeks should my business shut down).
But at what point do we have to draw a line ?
