  1. Wilky says:

There are quite a few of us that are against gay marriage but for civil unions, including many of my gay friends, as long as they get the “goodies”, their word, that are associated with marriage.

I would’ve liked to see the next few minutes of the interview that wasn’t shown on that clip for a liitle more context.

  2. Kim Ritter says:

It seems like a good compromise between far left and far right. I read somewhere that Bush really doesn’t care about the issue of gay marriage, but opposition to it reliably rallies his base. Why don’t gays push hard for civil unions?

  3. dan says:

we should bring back the “colored section” thing too. that was fun, wasn’t it? separate but equal. it’s a good thing.

  4. Julien says:

Hear, hear, Dan. Good god, we have not evolved farther than Rosa Parks and that bus seat.

She should have been happy, huh, Wilky? After all, she had a seat. It was an “equal” seat, huh, Wilky?

But in a separate part of the bus.

  5. Rudi says:

Better to have a seat on the back of the bus than to be thrown under the bus. The Civil Rights decisions/actions were incremental in nature. It took two decades for the CR movement to gain traction. If Rosa went from being arrested to driving the bus things would have been quite different. The Far Right screams “activist judge” for every decision that doesn’t fit their narrow agenda, what do think would happen with RP driving the bus.

  6. Kim Ritter says:

I agree with Rudi- We have had enough backlash from the Christian conservatives over even the most minimal gains in gay rights. Any talk of legalized gay marriage almost guarantees their constituency will organize a groundswell of voter turnout, taking the country backwards towards more “traditional values”. Civil unions are less inflammatory, and a pragmatic solution. At least for now.

  7. Wilky says:

Gee Julien, I guess you missed the part where I said that many of my gay friends aren’t that worked up about the marriage part but rather they just want the “goodies” that are associated with it. Does your analogy work for them to or is your scorn reserved just for me?

And Julien. The only people that I would prefer to sit in a separate part of the bus are the idiots that insinuate that I am or think like a racist.
