China weighs covert ops to overthrow North Korea’s Kim

Report: China weighs covert ops to overthrow North Korea’s Kim

China has begun drawing up plans to attack North Korea, according to the Paris-based Intelligence Online newsletter. Hu Jintao, head of the Central Military Commission, has ordered the Chinese military to draw up the attack plan as a move “deliberately meant as a threat to the regime of Kim Jong-Il.” The report said the plan was leaked to sources close to Western intelligence in Hong Kong.

The action follows China’s displeasure at the Oct. 9 nuclear test, which Hu regarded as a snub to the International Affairs Leadership Group that he has headed since 2003. The report said Hu has dealt with Kim in a conciliatory manner, unlike his predecessor Jiang Zemin, who disliked the North Korean ruler.

This makes sense. China is not interested in Korean reunification and increased US influence in the Region. And China can’t allow 25,000,000 Korean refugees to swarm into China.

Not sure where your reunification angle came from. Nothing in Kim’s past and certainly not his aggressive nuclear stance hints at even the remotest chance of reunification. And clearly the West has no power to bring that about, certainly not the paper tiger USA that couldn’t subdue Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan. I suspect that if China wanted Kim out, they would do the job quite decisively. China is the new global superpower. Too bad we couldn’t outsource the Bin Laden job to them instead of the ne’er do well Bush.

It’s well past time for China to start policing its own neighborhood.

I agree with BYG, China should have BEEN taking care of NK.

  4. Paul in Austin says:

North and South Korea have teamed up to pursue hosting the Olympics. There is sympathy on both sides for reunification whether or not it is currently possible. A Chinese intervention would dash those dreams for another generation.

With Chinese control they may at least allow families to reunite in the South.

  5. Krous says:

So instead they drive 25,000,000 refugees into South Korea.

  6. Paul in Austin says:

    Krous,
How did you come up with that outcome?
Because the Chinese might put friendly generals in charge?

  7. I would think China would draw up these plans, just in case, but I just don’t see this ever happening. I mean, who wants NK right now?

  8. Eric says:

No one would really want NK, except SK, but that really isn’t the point. China may get tired or worried enough (japan rearming anyone?) that they move to stop NK from dragging them into something worse or to keep a ballance of power. I don’t think these plans are much more than a threat right now to try and keep NK inline.
