Overdoing It

This story reminded me of certain comments left here at The Moderate Voice by more liberal people, accusing ‘rightists’ or people right of center, of trying to prevent people from exercising their right to vote:

A Brazilian law designed to ensure fair elections has kept police from arresting a 23-year-old law student who confessed to hiring hitmen to kill his mother.

Adriano Saddi Lima Oliveira told police he paid 40,000 reais ($18,433) to hitmen who killed his mother Marisa, a real estate tycoon, several months ago, a police investigator told local TV. Oliveira told police his mother was squandering his inheritance going out with her boyfriend.

Police wanted to arrest him but were unable to do so because of a law that prohibits anybody from being arrested five days before and two days after an election, unless they are caught in the act of committing a crime.

The law aims to curb heavy-handed tactics — like a local political chief trying to hang onto power by having his opponents arrested on election day and locked up until polls close.

That might just be overdoing it a little bit, no?

Why would Republicans need to resort to this? They have Deibold.

Brazil is a different country. They still attempt to cover up corruption here. In Brezil, corruption is a way of life and they don’t attempt to hide it much.

They also call to Democratic areas and tell the “stupid” that the election date has changed. They call SC voters and tell them that SyMcCain has a Nig*** baby. The old man Daly crowd was good at it too. I lost McCain after SC and his kissing up to Falwell, Hillsdale College OK Bob Jones U NOK.

Michael, you do lots of posts, which I think is a good thing. But it sometimes comes at a cost, where a sketchy presentation of the facts somewhat misrepresents the situation, or where an analogy is suggested that’s problematic when exposed to further scrutiny.

Given what you’ve said, though, not arresting this guy seems going too far.

    jjc,
Given the recent discussion that you and I had on voter disenfranchisement, I’m glad to hear that at least in principle you think this goes too far.

    CS, I’m a very reasonable guy ;)

Why elections are held on Tuesdays: LINK

In short, some very old reasons.

    jjc,
Yes, some very old reasons; some of which are no longer salient (the agrarian ones) and some are (the religious ones).
