Israel sweetened its offer to the Palestinians.
If miraculously Hamas accepts, then the wise course is to reward the Palestinians with overwhelming aide and support.
This is to help promote moderation in their community and to help make a peaceful prosperous future look more attractive than the violent past.
The link to aljeezeera should spark some debate. I guess the hardline approach didn’t work.
Diplomacy is definately a fine art. Giving too much for too little is usually just as bad or worse than demanding too much and giving too little. At first glance this looks to me like too much from Israel for too little, but then maybe Olmert is looking for more than just the Israel prisoner from Palestine. Maybe he is making this jesture for the international community at large, who (perhaps rightly) have a tendancy to scrutanize and criticize the powerful (Israel) more than the weak (Palestine). If it could really get some of the UN back on the side of Israel, to believe that Israel is trying to be more than reasonable in the face of an unreasonable opponent, then it is probably well worth it.
Anyone know how this offer is being taken on the Palestinian street?
Has there been any reliable evidence that Shalit is still alive other than that Hammas says this is the case?
Olmert may be giving away the farm to setup the Palestians. If the Palestians will not accept the peace offer, then the next war won’t be critized like the one this last summer.
rudi, the palestinians could not be “set-up” that way if they actually were in favor of peace with Israel.
And Paul Silver, after all this time how can you be so gullible that giving anything away to the palestinians will lead to peace? The relinquishing of Gaza has lead to missiles fired at Israeli communities and the smuggling of ever greater amounts of weaponry into Gaza. I’m still amazed at the naivete of some people. This blog is beginning to sound less moderate and more like every other leftist blogs with regards to the Middle East.
