Thank you. I should have added to my post (but it woulda broken the flow, ya know) that there are proposals to merge UMDNJ into either the Rutgers University football team, er . . . medical system and/or the Robert Wood Johnson system.

It should be of no surprise that the outcome will be based more on political than practical considerations.

I call it the Garden State of Mind.

The jug handles are quaint and aren't going to go away. Neither is public diffidence about corruption.

Everybody knows somebody who knows a corrupt politician. Many a homeowner has greased the palm of a bottom feeder in this sea of corruption, most likely a municipal building inspector.

Beyond the apathy (and in some cases downright approval), there is a structural problem that makes reforming New Jersey extremely difficult:

There is an enormous hole in the power structure between the top -- a governor with enormous clout -- and the welter of county, township and municipal governments at the bottom. There simply is nothing in between.

When Jon Corzine was sworn in as governor back in January, the keynote of his inaugural address was a pledge to enact sweeping ethics reform. If that sounded familiar to jaded New Jerseyans, it’s because predecessors since time immemorial had said the same thing.

Corzine's call to arms was greeting with an enormous yawn.

The voters of New Jersey has had many times to have a say about this and every time they have said that they do not care. Thus, nothing should be about this. Corruption is part of the price that one pays to live in New Jersey and most everyone who lives there understands.

How else could a state tolerate jug handles when they are driving?
