Ignoring The Inconvenient

The New York Sun reports that “tens of thousands of Israel supporters”, for the second day in a row, “gathered across the street from United Nations headquarters to protest President Ahmadinejad of Iran and to call for the unconditional release of the Israeli soldiers kidnapped on July 12.”

(Some of) the speakers (the Sun sums up) were, Tzipi Livni (Israel’s foreign minister), Elie Wiesel, Professor Alan Dershowitz, US Ambassador to the UN Bolton and Governor Pataki.

Livni:

We stand united today against the terrorist and the hostage takers. We say to them terror will not defeat us. We will not rest until the Israeli hostages, our sons, come home to the embrace of a loving nation.”

The wife of kidnapped Israeli soldier Ehud Goldwasser, Karni Goldwasser told the UN to:

“Stop talking and start to act”

Elie Wiesel about Ahmadinejad:

“A man who brings shame to the world has no place anywhere. He must be excluded from all groups of international nations”

Powerful messages, important people and lots of protesters. Yet, as Ed points out some of the major US media organizations do not (thus far) seem to be paying a lot of attention to it.

Meanwhile, Charles Johnsen reports that Emile Lahoud pulled out – on the podium the UN General Assembly – a picture featuring the famous Green Helmet Guy, yes Hizbullah’s propagandist-in-chief, carrying a girl in his arms. The picture, of course, shot by controversial ‘photographer’ Adnan Hajj. For those who are wondering why that name sounds so familiar: yes, he is the photographer that got caught doctoring photos.

It’s all one big joke.

    Where’s Kofi on this one.

  2. Probably encouraging people to applaud. You know, like those people at talkshows, who try to get the audience into being enthusiastic, no matter really, what the host says.

  3. Davebo says:

Nice hat tip to Charles there!

Finally the myth of civilian casualties during the recent conflict in Lebanon has been dispelled!

IT WAS JUST ONE FREAKIN FLARE YOU IDGITS! AND SURE THERE WAS SMOKE, BUT NOT THAT MUCH SMOKE!

Seriously Michael, is your plan to be the LGF representative here at The Moderate Voice?

Long-time lurker here… This is the post that finally brought me into the commentariat here.

I’m sick to my stomach. 40,000 people on the streets here in NYC protesting Ahmadinejihad and supporting Israel and nobody cares. Where are the reporters? Where are the cameras? Looking for Suri Cruise? Even Pale Male and those stupid birds being evicted from the frieze of Paula Zahn’s chic chic Central Park co-op made the front pages at least a few times!!! Meanwhile, behind the barriers in the now-soiled halls of the UN, the leading despots and kleptocrats of the world are taking the podium to play a sick game of “Na, na, I’m more f*ck’d in the head than you are!”

It’s surreal and might just be funny if it wasn’t so damn serious…

  5. Laura says:

The UN itself is one big joke. A very sick and dangerous joke.

They applauded chevez’s calling Bush a devil. Why do we allow this monstrosity known as the UN on our soil, and pay for it no less?

  6. Rudi says:

Is this the Kleine Groene Voetballen site?

  7. Pyst says:

We pay 22% of the total operating cost.

And it exsist because we created it in conjunction with our closest WW2 allies. You know, the other 78%.

  8. Rudi says:

benfong – Like MvdG you parrot the Newsmax/LGF meme. Local reports claim the crowd at “thousands”, not 35,000 as you and Pam at AtlasShrugs exageraate. There have been protests at the UN both for and against Bush, the Iraq war and Israel. This was just another rally/protest. Stop the “left wing media hates Israel” propaganda.

  9. Benfong: I agree completely. It is incredibly sickening that no one is paying any attention to these rallies. Israel’s foreign minister, among other people, was one of the speakers. How can one not report that?

  10. Pyst says:

That’s funny, I saw the protests outside shown often on the news here. I wasn’t glued to the TV to see it either, it was just reported quite a few times by CNN and Faux, maybe others just weren’t watching when it was on the screen.

Funny how some get all in a tozzy over a few thousand demonstratiting at the UN, but scoff and dismiss hundreds of thousands demonstrating when it came to the war in Iraq. Those demonstrations took place worldwide, had massive crowds, and barely got a blip on the radar by the news media. Now that was a case of supression by the media there, and not the MUCH smaller affair you are complaing got no attention, which isn;t true at all.

  11. Sure Pyst, you are completely right.

  12. benfong says:

Rudi, where do you get off? It’s called first hand experience and NYPD estimates.

I couldn’t give a damn what Pam Atlas thinks, and I certainly don’t read that other trash, even if they sometimes get it right.

I’m not saying the left wing hates Israel because I think the problems of many media outlets go way beyond any institutional political bias.

  13. Pyst says:

Michael, I saw the protests on CNN several times, and saw it later in the day on network news as well. It wasn’t a massive protest, but got TV coverage when the anti-war protests of massive scale got little to none when they happened. Maybe those protests got coverage in Europe, but our press mentioned them only in short blips like it was a taboo thing to report.

Your news and ours are VERY different in what they show, and you might get a shock if you watched what we are fed as news.

  14. Rudi says:

No some articles and posts claim these as police estimates. Please show a link that verifies the 35,000 count. This link, from NYS PBS, mentions only thousands, the 35,000 count sounds like BS.

The local press may have ignored this rally because of the Wingnuts at the NYT. Pammy was there with the LGF crowd.
