This guy is my U.S. Representative. He was my GA State Representative before that. I've met him many times, and chatted with him. Two years ago I voted against him in the primary, in the run-off, and crossed party lines and voted against him in the general election. These statements are perfect examples of how he thinks and what he says regularly. The sad part is, if you came done here, you'd find he's not alone. There are many locals that agree.
BUT, may it be known, this local doesn't agree.

Keep getting the word out Americans aren't Terrorists and we don't Torture.

Being an American used to mean that certain values and beliefs could not be rationalized away--

 "Electric shocks are given to people during initiations to different clubs. . . . is that torture? I don't know."

Hazing is illegal-and that doesn't take into account variations of intensity or duration that could lead to death.

Is this really a convincing argument for lowering our standards to that of the very countries we used to condemn for human rights abuses- Syria, Guatemala, North Korea, China, Iran, Uganda, Uzbekistan????

Are we joining the axis of evil with the weakest of rationalizations?

Well when everyone else is doing it why not him, well everyone under the thumb of Rove and GWB. I just read the story on yahoo that the house panel agrees w/ the white house. I always think they can't get worse, yet somehow they surprise me. Stunning, just stunning.

Then I read in the dallasnews.com (Online DMN) that one of the local radio personalities that is far right leaning, visited Guantanamo and thought it wasn't so bad. He must have seen the holiday inn portion the detainees are staying in...

I just don't know what to think anymore.

<blockquote>
"Electric shocks are given to people during initiations to different clubs ... Is that torture? I don't know."
</blockquote>

Hazing is against the law. PERIOD! It is against the law because people either get hurt or degraded. This person thinks a hazing initiation is equal to the treatment the enemy combatants will face? Will the combatants be treated afterwards with a beer, some laughs, and finding the local watering hole to find a date for the night?!?!

Secondly, this person is a CONGRESSMAN. He is to know what the law says since he drafts them for the rest of us to follow. This is not brain surgery. What does the law say about hazing? Can a person be prosecuted for doing this deed?

<blockquote>
Westmoreland said that definition is too vague and that he believes intelligence professionals deserve more flexibility.
</blockquote>

The pro-torture group is just trying to fuzzy the line what is morally, ethically, and legally right. Why is it that the rubber-spine Congress so willing to navigate through this minefield that no other administration or Congress had tried to in the last 57 years?
