Iraq, Saddam Judge and Democracy

Nothing seems to be going well for the Iraqi and the U.S administration…Even the facade of democracy keeps coming apart in that country…But this is funny…

Both the administrations are in a bind and facing an extremely embarrassing situation.

What to do with the Chief Judge Abdullah al-Amiri, the Shiite judge presiding over the second Saddam Hussein trial, who has declared that “Saddam Hussein is not a dictator”.

Despite the howls of protests from the prosecutors, it may be a tricky thing to just sack the Chief Judge by the appointing authorities who say that Iraq is now a democracy!

The BBC gives some details.

Unless the judge was elected, I don’t see any correlation between Iraq being a democracy and difficulty in sacking an incompetent judge. If Iraqi law gives the appointing authorities the power to sack him, then it is not only possible, it is their duty to do so.

Isn’t the one essential requirement for a democracy an independent judiciary Brian? Shouldn’t it be a difficult impeachment process to sack this judge?

I just wish this bastard, Saddam, had been shot in his hole. This trial, and his grandstanding for all the Bathists to see, is not helping the Iraqi people achieve their deserved democracy. It’s criminal.
