So it seems…
MEN have royally messed up everything…Iraq, Afghanistan, the media world and so on. It is time MEN took a backseat and let WOMEN be in the driver’s seat.
If I was an American I would vote for any WOMAN candidate belonging to any party in the next elections!!!
And the WOMEN POWER is surely emerging! In the classes where I teach journalism in India the ratio between young men and women is nearly 30:70.

Now we have news from the UK where it is the same story. WOMEN university students now outnumber MEN across all subject areas, from engineering to medicine and law to physical sciences in Britain, says The Times.
“New figures from Universities UK showing that 57 per cent of all students are women demonstrate the remarkable progress that girls and women have made in the education system since campaigners against female entry to universities in the late 19th century argued that the ‘overeducation’ of women could lead to sterility, brain damage and nervous collapse.
“The figures raise serious concerns that many boys and young men are being left behind by an education system that plays to the strengths of girls and undervalues the achievements of boys.
“Mr Geoffrey Crossick, chairman of Universities UK, the umbrella body for universities, said that the dominance of women students was gradually changing the university environment, probably for the better. ‘It has toned down the macho culture in some subjects,’ he said.

“And Jenny Watson, chairwoman of the Equal Opportunities Commission, noted that, once they had left university, women graduates still lagged behind men in the the pay stakes.
” ‘We must remember that, while girls are forging ahead at school, they are still falling behind in the workplace and continue to suffer a 17 per cent pay gap,’ she said.
“The report also recorded a big increase in the numbers of students living at home with their parents, from 12 to 20 per cent in the past ten years.”
In many parts of India where there was matriarchal rule, and the remnants of it can still be seen, there is a belief that WOMEN POWER was lost centuries ago because of the fatal abberation and increased tyranny of women. Those societies, it has been observed, where once women were in power, are more civilized.
However, in the recent centuries we have seen the rising tyranny of men…This and other serious aberrations in men may result in their gradually passing on the baton to women…and possibly back to matriarchal rule.
It is the cyclical order of things in the NATURE, you know!!! So be prepared macho men in this world! Don’t say that I had not warned you!
Women should be extremely grateful to men like George Bush, Osama bin Laden and so on for expediting the return of the WOMEN POWER.
Oh boy, I’m really getting sick of this “women get paid less in similar functions” crap. I would make at least 20% less if it weren’t for me annually threatening my boss with lines such as “my salary is way below my market value” and “the new responsibilities that you gave me certainly justify a significant wage increase”.
I’ve spoken to women at the office and I never get the feeling that they put enough pressure on their bosses. So let those women take the initiative rather than complain about things not being equal.
As for myself, as a Caucasian male I feel structurally discriminated in Western society. Look at the amount of press releases focused on things women can supposedly do better than men. If a similar press release was written about men being able to do things better than women, there would be hundreds of complaints within one day.
We’ve also seen the opposite of ‘male hegemony’, as described by Swaraaj: Sweden. I suggest you take a look at how messed up that country is.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against women in high positions, but I would just like it if for once people stopped talking about races, colours, origins and sexes and hire people that are simply best qualified for the job.

”I would vote for any WOMAN candidate belonging to any party in the next elections!!!”
Yes, don’t ever consider the politics or opinions of who you vote for, just check between their legs…
”This and other serious aberrations in men”…
And what, pray tell, might these serious aberrations that are restricted to only men be?

There are many things I expect to see and read on TMV. This post, however, was never one of them.
I consider myself to be fiscally conservative but highly socially liberal. You Swaraaj Chauhan, however, are perfect example of how a good movement (women’s rights) can spawn it’s own enemy. You aren’t preaching equal rights. Equality mean a level playing field. It does not mean sexist domination, which is what you associate with men. If you expect to make any headway trust me, alienating your own (male) liberal allies is not the way to go.
You would do well, Ms. Chauhan, to remember that there is a vast difference between loudly demanding equal rights and advocating just another brand of sexist domination.
A woman screaming that “it’s their turn at dominion” is absolutely no different than a man lording over his wife while demanding she get back in the kitchen and grab him a beer. They are both sexist; and they are both the antithesis of equality.
Well, for a few hundred years we have just been checking between their legs and opting blindly for the male of the species to rule us.
Just to make a little correction. I belong to the male of the species and my dear wife kindly calls me a “male chauvinist pig”. And now Dustin M. brands me as a women’s protaganist. Wow!
The fault is mine. At this time it is afternoon in India, and well past midnight in the United States. So people at this hour could be in different moods influenced by many considerations, including the liquid diet. I understand. Or, may be just sleepy.
No need to get hysterical Dustin M. You have hijacked the discussion into a totally different direction.
What about the main theme of the post that women are now dominating the universities? Any comments on that? Maybe when you wake up!!!
I am European so for me itr was morning and my liquid diet exists of coffee and tea
One critical thing you did not mention in your post is that the bulk of women still prefer motherhood to building a career. Hence, there are many more women among part-timers than men.
I have to disagree with your line on the ‘main theme of the post’ as the post clearly summarises the real theme in the first and last paragraph. And I strongly diasgree with that theme.
As a female, I’ve always been grateful that I was born in a time where opportunities were being made available that weren’t in previous generations. I am grateful to those who opened the doors to these opportunities, but I agree with the statement above because I think the feminist movement went far afield.
I was once interviewed by the New York Times and the reporter called me to ask if I preferred to be referred to as “Dr.” or “Ms.” I hold a doctoral level degree but due to the subject content, I decided that it might be misleading to use the Dr. title in the context of the story so I told her not to use this, but I asked instead of Ms. to use Mrs. She was completely taken aback and asked why, to which I replied that “Ms.” has connotations of feminism and I am rather anti-feminist. That completely dumbfounded her and she asked how could I be anti-myself. Somehow the point was completely unfathomable to her, that as a female I could possibly not identify with the current feminist movement.
The story ended up running with me as “Ms. Stanley”, for which she apologized and said that it was too late to change the copy before they went to press.
Well…well…well…I can see Mrs Stanley that you are diplomatic and politically correct in the face of such strong male statements….And the fact that in this blog you have to contend with predominantly male commentators. So might well be at peace with them!!!
Feminism died long time ago. The issue under discussion here is different. No one here seems to be interested in discussing the main issue as to why women are outnumbering men in the universities.
I am seriously looking for an answer.
Swaraaj,
Sorry, I didn’t mean to hijack the topic from your original issue.
I don’t know why women are now outnumbering men at universities. I have seen some research about one factor that your article mentioned, that the educational system plays to the strengths of girls and not to boys. And, there are some concerns that as a result of concerns that girls were being overlooked in elementary through high school grades, there has been a pendulum swing so that they now may be getting more attention from teachers at the expense of boys who need help.
I wonder if financial aid may be a factor too, in terms of preferential awards to females. I really don’t know though.
Swaraaj,
On this:
I hardly think that my statement to disavow feminism is going to endear me to most of the male commentators here, whose views are generally far more liberal than mine!
