Swaraaj- Its not that often I agree with CS-but in this respect, she is right-Iraq needs the investment to bring oil production back to pre-war levels and give the government some badly needed revenue. I didn't and don't agree with the invasion, but we have to deal with Iraq as it is now.

Swaraaj,
Oil is obviously vital to American interest, but as the link that I posted shows, it is also vital to Iraqi interests. The two are not mutually exclusive.

<blockquote>
Kim Ritter: "Also, if we leave, what happens to the permanent US bases and the expensive new embassy that we are building? And haven't multinational oil corporations already set up business in the south?
</blockquote>

Come on Kim where is the American idealism...the very reason of getting into Iraq was to teach the poor Iraqis the finer nuances of democracy and good civilsed manners/behaviour. Where did this oil thing come in???

It would sound rather selfish to think of only oil, and money spent on American embassy. That would mean that America had been a bad selfish teacher and used the Trojan horse of good of intention for ignoble/commercial purposes!!!

Democracy for Oil....What!!!

Thanks, C Stanley- hopefully the Iraqi's will be able to parlay international investment into rebuilding their economic/political stability-this seems like a smart move by the government. As much as I want us out- I don't think the Iraqis deserve what has happened to their country. The worst outcome is for a long-suffering people to live without hope. Free elections are just one aspect of a democracy-they don't create one by themselves.

But it also empowers Iran, and makes oil diplomacy that much more complicated. All the more reason to work to improve the technology for alternative fuels and increase the CAFE standards.

Also, if we leave, what happens to the permanent US bases and the expensive new embassy that we are building? And haven't multinational oil corporations already set up business in the south?

There is a silver lining to this if true, it gives us the perfect opportunity to leave. If the Shiites are going to be that blatant at seizing oil wealth and cutting off the rest of their fellow citizens we should feel no remorse in letting them go their own way.
