Cicero recently welcomed a new co-worker into his office, and shares what he thinks this particular Pakistani feels about his extremist brethren:
I asked him if he was Muslim. “Yes, he said, “but really it doesn’t mean much. I eat pork and drink beer. I never go to the mosque. He seemed anxious to let me know that he was just a normal guy.“In the city, most the people I know are like me. We live good lives and try to stay away from politics. It’s totally different out in the country. People are backwards and conservative. They’re crazy.
So, is this the majority perspective in the Muslim world or just wishful thinking?
sounds like a perspective from the US. (ha ha)
seems like we need to encourage moderates around the world not to “stay away from politics”
What cracks me up is that the American’s perspective is that this guy is a regular guy because he eats pork, drinks beer and doesn’t go to mosque, LOL.
But even beyond that, why do we feel that we can only live in peace with people if they are like us? I guess that’s human nature but personally I don’t care if someone’s culture is vastly different than mine. I’ll agree not to even consider blowing people up as long as they agree to the same. It really makes no difference to me whether or not we have the same dietary and recreation preferences, or whether or not we practice our respective religions.
