Here's my experience: If I am registered "Independent," there is no one to vote for in the primary election on most years. So, I register Democrat (or Republican) and there are many candidates running unopposed in the primary in both parties. For example, we have a far-right Republican US Rep. Last primary 2 good moderate GOP candidates opposed her and I was interested in one of the them. The person running for US Rep. on the Democrat ticket was unopposed. I was also interested in voting for a moderate Democrat for state house who had an opponent in the primary. I had to choose one party and couldn't vote for moderates in both parties in the primary. Our far-right US Rep. won the general election, but not by much (she didn't even do well in her home county). One I feel is more moderate than the other and is therefore the better of the two. Both of our senators are extremely popular within this state because they tend to listen to thier constituents can show independence now and then from the party line and can work both sides of the aisle to reach a consensus. If more states had senators like we have in Maine I feel this country would be in a lot better state of affairs than what extreme partisan politics has brought us. How do I know the candidate who seems so reasonable on the campaign trail won't become part of the establishment in Washington, when he sees how intolerant his party is of moderates who want to vote their conscience? Example: Lincoln Chaffee of New Hampshire is being run out of town on a rail for failing to tow the party line. Republicans are calling him a "limosine liberal" and trying to replace him by supporting a conservative in the primary.
