A Tale of Two Tragedies (Katrina and BP)

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast (especially New Orleans), a particular political log jam occurred between the Democratic Governor Kathleen Blanco and President George W. Bush (R). Of course, the media was outraged that Bush took so long to respond to aftermath of the storm. Little has been said about the role Blanco played in refusing federal assistance because of her stance of wanting to maintain control because of state sovereignty issues.

Five weeks ago, a BP oil rig exploded and has poured thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana is once again in the eye of the storm and we get to see how elected officials and the media are responding to this latest tragedy. Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has come out publicly asking for more help from the Obama Administration. Of course, the political subplot is more intriguing when Sarah Palin asserts that maybe the Democratic President isn’t doing enough to solve the problem because of his ties with big oil.

Now, that is rich, a Palin (Drill, Baby, Drill) calling out a Obama because of his ties with oil companies. I just want to know where is the media outrage on a five week oil spill that shows no signs of being stopped. If this was George W., there would be picket signs in front of the White House by now.

Things that make you go hmmm…
