You only have two choices, if you want some type of oversight on the administration you can only vote Democratic, there are no other parties that have a serious chance of prevailing. It is not “alarmist, just reality. Considering what the Republicans have done with total control of all three branches of government it is a logical, not alarmist, choice to put some balance back into the political scheme of things.
But actual “counterbalance” often comes from the centrists. The left alone can’t do it; votes split on party lines and the power surge continues. The moderates (from both parties) are needed to tip an issue, and you can’t do that by being extreme. Think of
-The “gang of 13″
-Souter’s opinion in Hamdan, pushing the President to work with Congress
-Some of the impediments put up by Arlen Specter
If we replaced all Democratic moderates with Democratic extremists, the Democrats would lose every vote held in Congress. Not only that, but the Republicans would feel encouraged to hold such votes.
More like smokescreen, then roll over and play dead for the administration. Specter is a fake moderate just like McCain, then put up a good front, then give the president exactly what he wants to the letter.
Question: how moderate is the GOP currently? Answer: they aren’t, they are extremist with a few that roll over to the whims of the party.
Question: how does having a bunch of moderates in the opposition going to counter extremist when they want to be bi-partisan all the time, only to see absoloutely none from the party with the power? Answer: elect some people that will stand up to the extremism, not by being the same but out of principle. Principle isn’t being extremist, this appeal to only one side to be moderate is a media creation that americans are buying into like the dupes they are, as the powerful are allowed to become even more extremist without even a peep. Examples: Chris Shay’s soon to be defeated and Schwartz of Mich. already defeated by a uber rightist, but nothing from the mass media appealing for moderism. So go cry a river for moderism somehwere where it’s needed, the GOP.
