I’ve posted a review of Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals here at PhiloBiblos.

  1. Salmenio says:

Did not read the book. I rather see Lincoln as a failure, since he failed to prevent America’s bloodiest war. From what I have read, he never really materialized as a genius, but kind of a desperate hill-billy. Oh well.

  2. JBD says:

Salmenio, if that’s your take on Lincoln, then my recommendation to read Goodwin’s book goes double for you.

Sal…we’re on the same page again.

Ya know what’s a bit mystifying to me is the praise black U S citizens give Lincoln.

If Lincoln HAD NOT been assassinated there would not be a black person in this country today.

I suggest people read up on the history of the West African nation of Liberia, founded 1821, how and why its monatary system was set up the way it was and still is, its Capitol, Monrovia, after president, Republican James Monroe, and for what purpose it was purchased and Republican Lincoln’s intended use for Liberia after the end of the War Between the States aka Civil War.

Studying this will give more than a little insight as to which U S political party backstabbers are the true ethnic loathing racists in this country.

I’ll give you the short version.

If Lincoln had lived, after freeing the slaves they would have all been shipped to Liberia and that’s an unarguable, very well documented, but swept under the rug, historical fact.

chipped, I suggest that you might want to read the book as well. While it’s very accurate that Lincoln (and many others) supported colonization for a time, he had moved very far from that position by the end of his life.

Yes, it’s true that by our standards many of Lincoln’s positions on race were not exactly liberal ones, but to make the statement that “If Lincoln HAD NOT been assassinated there would not be a black person in this country today” is quite inaccurate indeed.

Also, it’s important to note that while James Monroe considered himself a “Republican” the term at the time of his administration referred to the Jeffersonians – quite different indeed from the Republican Party which sprang up in the 1850s, largely in opposition to the expansion of slavery.
