It appears that not every Republican wants embattled RNC chair Michael Steele’s head on a platter. Yesterday, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and 2008 Republican V.P. nominee Sarah Palin, came to Steele’s defense for different reasons.
Gingrich, being the pragmatist that he is, correctly assessed the situation regarding Steele’s tenure at the RNC. Gingrich’s point is that Republicans should be focusing its energy on winning a majority in the House and the Senate in 2010, not being distracted about the “foolish” personal mistakes surrounding Steele as RNC Chair.
Palin, also being a pragmatist, heaped praise on Steele by stating that she “is glad he is the leader of the party.” Why would she say something like this that has got to annoy her tea party base? Why not? Steele is not a threat to her position in the party. More interesting, I have heard rumors of a Palin-Steele ticket (gasp). If that happens, I think the Mayans got it right about that end of the world stuff happening around the end of 2012, they just missed it by about six weeks. Not bad for a civilization with computers or an iPad…
