I have seen the greatest happiness...people laughing from the heart living in a most squalid conditions. People living in utter luxury have forgotten to laugh...they mostly complain!!!

That was an aside.

Anyway, thank you Julie for your kind words. Joe is a very old friend and a wonderful human being. Imagine we have been friends for over three decades!!!

Is that a big ole wart under her nose, or just a big ole bugger hangin' out of it?

Mideastbeast you get the ceeeegar today...there are only a handful of Indian's benefiting from their economy...the rest live like cooped up pigs in an over crowded sty.

I wish people, especially the righties who seem to have never left their own state further than Disneyland, would accumulate enough dough to do some traveling around the world to see an unushered view of what the rest of the world is really like and the squallar people are forced to live in, for themselves.

Definitely interesting stuff. I was, however, under the impression that China was failing miserably when it came to "Backbreaking, empty-stomach poverty" and that the gap was ever widening between their farmers and the coastal cities.

Don't tell me my Discovery Channel got it wrong because I'll cry. It's... precious to me... O.o

I was thinking beans. NAVY beans!

Boston Baked Beans

Portion 5 to 6 ounces (approx. ¾ cup)

Beans, Navy, dried 12 Pounds
Water, cold to cover
Water, boiling 3 to 4 Gallons
Salt 5 Ounces
Mustard, dry 1 Ounces
Salt Pork, Bacon, or Ham fat, cubed 4 Pounds
Molasses 1 Quart

1. Pick over and wash beans thoroughly. Soak in cold water about 6 hours.

2. Do not drain. Add boiling water to cover. Simmer about 1 hour until beans are tender, but not mushy. Drain off excess liquid. Reserve.

3.Add salt, mustard, salt pork and molasses. Place in baking pans.

4. Bake in slow oven (300º F) 3 to 4 hours, adding liquid from the boiled beans as needed.

Have some great AMERICAN baked beans for this fourth of July outing. You can't go wrong!

I love that Joe invited you to become a regular here, Swaraaj. I have learned more reading your posts than most others. Perhaps you've been at TMV for a bit and I just didn't know, but you're great! Good eye, Joe.

I've always been interested in India's progress and the fact that despite all the hype, it still manages to remain pitifully poor. Fixing poverty on a scale as large and deep as India's has never been attempted before so it should be interesting to see how they go about doing this. I think more focus on rural development is starting to make its way onto the major party platforms.

Ditto that Daniel.

The wealth situation in India can easily turn hardline socialist if the distrubution issue isn't solved in the next decade to some degree. It's going to be a tough issue for Indian society to tackle, and cause some major growth pains. Still one thing bothers me about India, is how is it's economy growth is going to affect the worlds natural resouces, and what countries are going to suffer since India has the potential to gobble up natural resources (China too) at a rate even the US can't achieve once it hits stride.

Not championing socialism right wingers, just stating a possability, so don't pop a bloodvessel.
