It was visualy great but the story line was so very weak. No it was not the best picture. I think the Hurt Locker was much better, course I do like the small films.

Script-wise, Avatar was a rip-off of dozens of films from Dances with Wolves to Pocahontas. It was an unimaginative storyline to be sure. Technically breathtaking, fine, but not at all unique or interesting beyond that. So no, no Oscar for Avatar, and rightly so.

Avatar won exactly the Oscars it should have — it was, as others have noted, visually stunning, and it's very cool that Cameron developed some new technologies to bring his vision to life. Good for him. Doesn't make it best picture. Of the 6 noms I saw, I actually thought Inglorious Basterds was the best, but I was happy to see Hurt Locker take the prize.

Avatar was a stunning and brilliant technological achievement that will change movies forever, and possibly save the movie theater business. I have no problem with it not being judged best picture or acting. I'm sure Cameron is content to have produced the TWO best grossing films ever.
