I went this afternoon to a showing of Al Gore’s film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and boy am I glad I did. This is a movie that had the potential to be absolutely horrible (yes, that would be the vision of Al Gore giving a slide show about global warming), and yet it was not that at all. It managed to be powerful without preaching, intelligent but not overwhelming, and, perhaps most importantly, not boring in the slightest.
From fuel efficiency standards to the melting of ice shelves and the fragile balance of ocean currents, Gore in this presentation makes a personal, persuasive, and realistic picture of what global warming is doing to our planet and what it will continue to do if we do nothing. The movie is at times very funny, but there were also times when humor was about as far as possible from what I was feeling.
Unfortunately, I’m sure that many people won’t see this film because they disagree with Al Gore’s stance on global warming. If you are one of those people, I implore you, reconsider – go see the movie. I agree with Roger Ebert, who in his review writes “You owe it to yourself to see this film. If you do not, and you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to.” I read Ebert’s review when I got home tonight, and as I got to the last line I had to chuckle. He writes “I did a funny thing when I came home after seeing ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ I went around the house turning off the lights.” Why’d I laugh? Because I had, just minutes before, done the exact same thing.
“Whenever the people are well-informed,
they can be trusted with their own government;
… whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice,
they may be relied on to set them to rights.”
–Thomas Jefferson to Richard Price, 1789. ME 7:253
I turned my lights off as well.
It never happens – a movie that’s only on 77 screens making the top ten. This is a serious groundswell. This means something. There is going to be a lot of clumsy election fraud in 5 months.
…clumsy election fraud? If you believe Robert Kennedy, they have had years to practice. It may be fraud, but it won’t be clumsy.
Call me naive, but I still believe the elections are not rigged. There is a little thievery everywhere, but I will not allow myself to believe it is hapening on such a large scale.
History may prove me wrong, and perhaps already has, and I won’t be suprised. But for now, I choose to move forward with my faith firmly placed in the system.
And to get back on topic, all my lights are off as well…
Elections not rigged? Tell that to the 90,000 Florida residents falsely accused of being felons and taken off the voter rolls by Jeb and K. Harris. Tell that to the millions of legitmiate Ohio voters given provisional ballots or told to wait in line for hours.
One of the key ingredients in any belief system that says the elections are fair is that George Bush and his people are too stupid or inept..”Just a good ‘ol Texas boy,” right? Bush himself amplifies that impression and for good reason. So people like yourself can not imagine how on top of the hard details the Bush folks are. They target mail. They suppress votes in black/latino areas. They miscount or add Bush votes.
I myself had to vote on a provisional ballot in 2004 but hadn’t changed address in 8 years..no change of precinct or voting location..my name wasn’t on the rolls for some reason. There’s definitely something wrong happening to our democracy, friend.
If they really want the film to make an impact, they should provide it to schools from Elementary thru High School, free. When a child asks a parent, why are we in this suburban instead of that car, maybe then folks will wake up. If they need to edit some for younger kids, so bet it.
Additionally, about 2 weeks before the November elections, release it to be played on the Discovery channel. Run ads on google, yahoo, and any other popular website about the date/time that it will be shown. Putting their money where their mouth is would be impressive. At this point I don’t think many folks that believe global warming is a non-issue will pay to go see it. That and those that dislike Al Gore, even if they think Global Warming is an issue, won’t pay to see it either.
And finally, switch to compact flourescents guys!
I just wish compact flourescents gave off a better quality of light.
Am I the only one who finds them colourless and flickery?
I googled up a review of full spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs that said these are good?
YMMV
(http://www.sunalux.com/s_lightbulbs.cfm)
Bylaws prohibiting “unsightly” clotheslines should be abolished everywhere.
Those darn compact fluorescents often die long before their advertised lifespan. I pretty much stick to GE and LOA because I’ve had too many premature failures from Philips and Sylvania (especially Sylvania!). I use them everywhere I can. Not only do fluorescents use less electricity, they produce less heat which makes it easier on the air conditioner.
Yes, bring back the clotheslines! Sun dried clothes are so nice. Front loading washers are great as well. We do a lot of laundry around our house, and our water bill dropped $10 and our electric (dryer) bill dropped $30 as soon as we got one. Ours uses next to no water and spins clothes nearly completely dry. It also sped up the process – no more waiting on the dryer.
Al Gore and his movie are still full of it on the anthropegenic global warming thing, though.
I just saw the film last night. Lets get down to business. The el cheapo flourescents that you can buy at 2.50 a piece are super bright and don’t flicker at all. They pay for themselves in ONE MONTH.
Second, Global warming can be reversed by dropping a bigger ice cube in the ocean, damnit! now shut up!
