Set Aside Anti-Americanism and Condemn Cuban Tyranny: Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland »
One could argue both Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama grew up from modest income families to become among the rich and famous. The difference between the two was demonstrated this week in actions which define their characters as class acts or pedestrian gluttons.
Michelle donated her famous inaugural dress to the first ladies collection at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.
Sarah stuffed her shopping cart with soaps, personalized stationery, leopard-print sandals and a slinky robe, among other artifacts of free swag at a West Hollywood store promoting the Academy Awards.
Ah, the nouveau riche. There are two broadly accepted definitions of the French term meaning newly rich.
A person who has suddenly risen to a higher economic status but has not gained social acceptance of others in that class.
One who has recently become rich, especially one who flaunts newly acquired wealth.
Michelle is following a custom by some but not all first ladies. The one-shoulder, white chiffon beaded gown was a fashion sensation designed by Jason Wu of New York. Whether she paid for it or was given to her for publicity value makes little difference.
Sarah is keeping her loot. In her defense, she did contribute an undisclosed amount to a Haitian earthquake relief charity sponsored by the Silver Spoon gift suite staging the event.
Palin has a penchant for taking goods and services she believes she is entitled. She did it during the presidential campaign to the horror of staffers from the John McCain campaign which paid the tab. She charged a six-digit fee to the common folks Tea Party Convention who could least afford it.
I don’t begrudge her charging fees for speaking engagements in which she capitalizes on her fame and glory brought not by her own doings but a stroke of fate of being selected as a Hail Mary pass by John McCain. She has proven her mettle in her own fashion and deserves the just desserts.
The swag surrounding the Academy Awards is nothing more than blackmail for people who can most afford to purchase the goodies out of their own pockets.
Sarah Palin is the personification of what’s wrong of being nouveau riche.
Jerry – perhaps you should have your facts straight, pesky things that they are, when you feel like slandering people.
I have no problem with Michelle Obama, she has done a great job as first lady, as did Laura Bush. Don't care for either of their husband's administrations however. The role of first lady, is however a very different role from that of President, and from that of politician in general, from that of a political or public speaker, etc. If you want to make comparisons, why not stick to people in the same type of role?
Jerry, you slipped a little on this one.
To be expected, as I've said before the mention of the words “Sarah Palin” have that effect on liberal IQs.
I didn't slip but concede I stretched too far as to the comparison between the two women. Anonymous sources in the articles I read say Palin returned the items for auction and wrote a $1,700 check to the Haitian charities. Common practice is that the selected goodies are sent to the celebrity homes while duplicates may or may not be placed on auction. I don't believe for a second she selected the items without the intent of receiving them. What value they have in an auction is a market value of limited time value to only a Palin faithful. As a seasoned newspaper reporter with the obvious built-in skepticism, I would want to see the charity check(s) before I believe that ruse. Sorry, but Palin's track record for truthfulness has a proven credibility gap one could drive a Mac truck through. — Jer
Palin's track record for truthfulness”
Next time try her versus Brittany Spears or some other show bus. type.
So does yours now Jerry, for ignoring a reported fact and substituting your own guess as to what may have happened with no proof at all.
You have no journalist ethics, do you? I didn't realize how dead on my characterization of your post as being slanderous was until you basically admitted you lied and misled because it made your accusations sound better.
Good thing this is just a blog, or you would rightfully deserve to be fired.
Jerry, I'm typing this comment with the hope that you haven't been fired yet.
Ah yes… another one of those pesky facts. It's hard to be Sarah… all those nasty people who have the temerity to remember your inconsistencies, exagerations, and fabrications!
I can't blame Palin for gathering anything and everything she can. Her star will fade and she has nothing to fall back on. The Obama's are set for life. The Palin's are way past their 15 minutes.
Everyone should look up the term “clout” as it is used in Chicago politics. Michelle Obama is a good example of clout. Ms. Obama cannot be called nouveau rich after having a job that paid over $300K a year with the University of Chicago hospital system. Of course no one knows what she did for the money since the position was eliminate after she left. One would have to suspect that Michelle Obama was being paid for that the UC and others could have access to her politician husband.
Of course, one could also look up the difference between the reporting on Sarah Palin's academic history (four different colleges) versus Michelle Obama failing the bar exams the first time and having a lack luster legal career.
Why are we even comparing the Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin? One is the First Lady of the US, the other is a dropout ex-Governor who could not even muster the strength to stay in office a full term.
Thank you for highlighting the remarkable qualities of Michelle Obama, our nation's First Lady. She is gracious in every way and is attempting to make a difference in our country during her husband's tenure in the White House. She behaves with grace and dignity and deserves all the accolades that have come her way.
Then there is Sarah Palin. The less said about her the better. Embarrassing.
