What a disgusting individual. For the life of me, I cannot comprehend what could ever make someone do something like this.

[He] was scheduled to be arraigned on felony animal cruelty charges in San Diego Superior Court Friday afternoon. The charge is punishable by prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

I'm not sure he will see any time in the prison, but he certainly belongs there.

I once knew a criminal defense attorney who was quite liberal when it came to defending felons.

He was an old 1960's peacenik type who would defend murderers, rapists, etc.

But he once said he would never defend an animal abuser… ever.

  3. GreenDreams says:

Yeah, I hate cruelty to animals (including humans) too. But dogs that bite people are routinely put down. Happens every day. I guess he would be forgiven for shooting the dog. I'm not defending him, but like others who believe in “deterrent” perhaps he believed he could avoid putting the dog down if he “taught it a lesson.” Hope the girlfriend's nose is ok. She is the injured HUMAN here.

You're right Patrick, send him to the pound. The fact is, some people should not own animals – not even goldfish.

  5. hkdharmon says:

I doubt a bite from a 10 week old pup is deserving of being put down. There was no mention of any injury to the girlfriend.

  6. GreenDreams says:

Pardon the easy quip, but I don't have a dog in this fight. The article says the dog bit the girlfriend. No other detail, so we don't know how badly. But we do know the dog owner didn't mean to injure the dog, as he took it to the vet. Bet he wishes he hadn't. As far as I know, there's no law against killing your dog.

If I had a dog (I don't) and it bit my wife, that dog would be gone. If I took it to the pound, they would probably put it down. Biters don't get adopted.

It sounds counterintuitive, but I can understand that. As upset as I get over human cruelty to other humans, a story like this one you posted upsets me far more. It just breaks my heart. It feels unbearable to me. That's why I try not to look at stories like that, even though sometimes I do.

  8. kathykattenburg says:

Wow, GD. I think this is a first for you and me, but I have to disagree with you here. Not that the girlfriend's safety or human safety is not just as important as animal welfare, but that's not the issue here.

Number One: This was a PUPPY. I doubt he could have seriously harmed the woman, or that he intended to harm her. Puppies are playful. I've never heard of a vicious puppy.

Number Two: This was a PUPPY. Puppies by definition need to be trained to behave appropriately with humans. Grown dogs too, of course, if they haven't been, but ALL puppies need to be trained. They are not born knowing how to behave.

Number Three: This was a PUPPY. A puppy is not a person. A puppy is a different species. Puppies do not have the cognitive capacity to understand cause and effect the way humans do. How in the name of all that is good and sane and sensible does a puppy or any dog learn not to bite people, even in play, by CHOKING him? What is the logical connection between A and B?

Although neither of us is in the man's head, I believe that your conclusion here is incorrect. I don't believe that a person can hold a dog down on the floor and choke him for half a minute without knowing that he's doing him harm and in fact intending to do him harm. The fact that he took him to the vet afterward means nothing. Violent men often take their wives or girlfriends to the hospital after beating them up, too.
