Hitting a plane once it’s airborne with an RPG would be quite a trick. RPG’s are great against ground-based targets, but an airborne aircraft would be travelling at about the same speed as the missile, or more likely, faster. I’ve seen these things fired while familiarizing with Soviet weaponry, and they just don’t travel all that fast.
Not to discount the murderous intent of these jihadists, but they don’t seem to be the sharpest tools in the shed.

The RPG is an anti-tank grenade launcher. It wouldn’t be my first choice for shooting down an airliner. Grenade launchers are not easy to aim. In fact, I would feel relatively safe siting in the plane as long as it was in flight.
Picking the right tool for the task is very important. I could make some suggestions, but there is no point giving anybody ideas.
