Sad, but 100% true. Politicians in office are constantly fundraising, and lobbyists hold many benefits for them. If they came up with solutions that would really be good for the country as a whole, and not just suit the narrow agenda of the special interests, they would find themselves out of payola. Once they sign on with a special interest, they are locked in, which is why we don’t see much bi-partisan compromise. For example, a solution to the energy crisis that would seem obvious to a sixth-grader, is out of reach because the pols are beholden to environmentalists, auto industry , labor unions or Big oil. Or they’re beholden to big contributors in their home district.
Maybe, we need to pass a law that allows them to take 6 months off to fundraise in their districts, in exchange for disallowing fundraising activities by lobbyists. Politicians always sound like they have solutions while they’re trying to get elected for office and when they’re out of office!
I hesitate respectfully to endorse this view. My own home state of Michigan produced the most estimable Philip Hart, long the touchstone in Michigan for honorable and responsible politics.
Honest politicians do happen; just less often than we need or deserve. We need to foster the betterment of the situation, if at all possible.

LOL, there are some days I think 15% is an understatement. Thanks Senator for the chuckle.
