‘Un-European’ Obama Demonstrates Why Europe Needs Russia: Gazeta of Russia

Has Obama turned his back on ‘Old Europe?’

Americans may not be aware of it, but for quite some time, Russia has been promoting the idea of a new Europe-wide security organization that would exclude the United States.

According to this article from Russia’s Gazeta, the Obama Administration, in giving the impression that it considers Europe less important that past U.S. administrations, should provide new impetus to the plan, which was put forward by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

For Gazeta, columnist Fyodor Lukyanov writes in part:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and two of her deputies have commented on Russia’s idea for a new security architecture for Europe. While raising the inadequacy of the existing system won the approval of the U.S. diplomats, they rejected this proposed method of solving the problem – no new institutions are needed, and it would be enough to perfect the existing ones.

The presidency of Barack Obama, for whom all of Europe cheered passionately during the election campaign, has turned out to be “un-European” in action.

Washington is concerned about the situation in the Middle East, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, South and East Asia. Europe is a partner everywhere – and everywhere, a secondary one. The only exception is, perhaps, Afghanistan, where the United States must rely on NATO, but mostly because of the background of this war, not a desire to fight alongside the allies.

Europe, for its part, doesn’t entirely understand America’s plans, and therefore is trying to hedge its bets for the future. Of course it’s difficult to imagine that Washington would entirely abandon Old Europe to its fate. But leading European states will have to get used to the new situation, as they become less and less able to determine the direction of global development, and more dependent on it.

The field of attraction and repulsion between the two most influential world powers is increasingly deciding the global political atmosphere.

This creates a fundamentally different situation for two other players used to being the center of attention – Russia and Europe.

    Good article and link.

I have mixed feelings about this possible change in the United States' relationship with Europe. We have had such a love hate thing going on with Europeans for so long in some ways I want to say good riddance. WWII has been over for so many years and the cold war is just a fading memory. To be honest I'm getting tired of our country being the great protector of the free world. Sometimes I think that we should concentrate on building up our own country and people and let the others fend for themselves, unless they really need or want our help.

On the other hand I am suspicious of the motives the Russians have in mind in their proposal. It certainly would bring an end to NATO. It would boost the Russian influence in the world and especially in Europe. Maybe this new improved Russia would be a detriment to the United States economically and diplomatically.

All and all though it sounds like Hillary is on the job that makes me feel a little better.

..interestingly enough, the least sexually immoral increases as the sexually immoral nationality is dragged down. Presumably into oblivion where all the past immoral empires have disappeared into.

There are so much wrong with that article that I don't really know where to start.

The most obvious error is that Europe would not look to Russia for a new partnership. The EU doesn't trust Putin nor his little dictatorship of a government. Russia is not a forward looking country. They are rich from natural resources that will be outdated in 50 years. China on the other hand is becoming more open, forward thinking, and has more money than it knows what to do with. Russia in not number 1 on the list of people to replace Kenny.

“Old Europe” was a Bush Admin phrase. When they left office, that phrase and thinking went with them. No one in Europe is holding that against America anymore.

France is not the EU. We are still and will always be strongly tied to the UK and Germany.
