The Dems Gas Tax Idea

It’s a good one. Possibly even brilliant…not something we usually see from the Dems.

    Sorry Justin
This is just as stupid, worthless and uproductive as any thing the Bush administration oil barrons have come up with. Political spin is political spin and although I’m a Democrat I will be the first to admit that the Dems plan fixes nothing and is just more political spin.

  2. The Dems said nothing about fixing the problem. This merely gives taxpayers a break, something that states have started doing after Hurricane Katrina drove gas prices up to these levels.

But here’s what it does fix…the oil companies. If they think they can keep up this system of making record profits when gas is sky high, then they have another thing coming. I’m not against them making profits, but record profits is ridiculous when prices are this high.

So forgive me if I think your calls of “stupid, worthless and unproductive” seems like spin of their own.

    0.20/gallon

As long as they are using the funds that would go to the oil companies (tax breaks), the idea does seem to make some sense. I don’t think it will happen. More likely they will continue to rake in the average of about 50 cents per gallon in taxes.

Can you tell me what exactly guaranties that the “savings” produced by the reduced tax would be passed on to consumers?

And can you tell me where exactly the Feds will come up with the money to do the stuff that those tax dollars normally pay for?

After those details are worked out, let’s decide whether or not it does any good.

As a political stunt, yes it’s brilliant. But as sound long-term policy, it’s silly.

In my opinion, the correct long-term policy would actually be to increase the gas tax, use the proceeds to spur alternative energy resouces (including nuclear), and to eliminate the tax breaks to the oil/gas industry altogether.

    Just my two cents.

  6. kritter says:

How about taking back the 8 Billion given to Big Oil, and investing that in alternative energy sources, while adopting stricter fuel standards for cars? I think increasing gas taxes without providing an alternative to consumers could cause spiraling inflation/recession. Democratic plan could ease the pressure on consumers as a quick fix, but it doesn’t ultimately solve anything. Shrewd response by the Dems to Bush’s proposal, tho.
