A Black Republican says that the Dems should nominate another Black candidate (in this case, Kweisi Mfume) to go up against the Republican candidate, Black Lt. Governor Michael Steele. I don’t think his logic holds up.
To be clear, I’m not endorsing Benjamin Cardin (the other Democrat) over Mfume. I’m just saying that I’m not convinced by this piece that Mfume is a must-select.
I don’t know enough about Cardin or Mfume to make a decision yet. The bit I really want to comment about, though, is the mention of the Governor’s race. Specifically O’Malley vs. Duncan for the Democratic nomination. I’ve lived just outside of Baltimore city for 14 years and I can tell you that nothing has really improved since O’Malley has been in office. He likes to skew numbers and kiss babies, parade around as a man of the people, but in truth, his administration is nothing more than a giant spin-machine that Karl Rove could envy. He sees the Governorship as a stepping-stone to the Presidency and nothing more.
Duncan, on the other hand, has a proven track-record of success in education and increasing jobs in Montgomery County. Rockville is now the high-tech center of Maryland with loads of high-paying jobs. Kids of all races do better than the national averages in reading and math which is a big deal in a county as diverse as Montgomery. If you want someone who can actually do the job, vote for Duncan or Erhlich. If you want a master politician, vote for O’Malley.
