It’s about time our two countries got around to doing this. India already has nukes, and it’s in both our interests to make sure they aren’t faced with a situation in which they would have to use them. India and the US are natural allies. Both are stable democracies, and we have common interests. This was another legacy of the Cold War which was in need of burying.

Nuke technology for mangoes….Yeah Indian should be thrilled, but congress won’t be, and should nix this obvious proliferation of nuclear technology. Funny how Bush forgets his calls for nuclear non-proliferation then does his usual 180 making the world a bit closer to the desired (fundy desrise that is) rapture.

I don’t think the Indian government is going to do handsprings of joy if they think this agreement is going to be nixed by the U.S. Congress. Swaraaj is correct about the overall context of the agreemement. The problem for GWB is that his clout and credibility are now at all time lows, plus you have an election year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it stall. Because the Indian government is saying that if this agreement is blocked it won’t help U.S. relations doesn’t negate what Swaraaj wrote above at all. What else would you expect them to say, given the importance with which New Delhi views the pact?

And pap to you hmmmmmm which is what I thought when I read your comment. I for one loved what SC wrote and especially like his wit. Obviously India will be concerned if this agreement because a lot hinges on it and as he notes above it came within a historical context.

Good timing. India just warned us of serious consequences in relationships because the deal was blocked.
