Politics Has Gone Too Far

Politics can be a dirty game. There are some shots that I wish weren’t taken. Sometimes, though, an attack can be brutal, personal, distasteful, and still be within the bounds of acceptable discourse.

Criticizing your opponent for where he chose to treat his 5-year old daughter’s malignant brain tumor is not one of them.

The offender is Rep. Curt Weldon (R-PA), facing a tough re-election fight against retired Admiral Joe Sestak. As of today, Weldon has not apologized.

This might be the single slimiest attack I’ve seen since Karl Rove accused an Alabama State Supreme Court Justice of being a pedophile. It makes the Swift Boat assault look positively genteel.

Shame.

Want slimy below the belt poltical attacks, just add an R. Nothing new for the poltically desperate to win types.

  2. Pyst says:

    ack “political” rather.

  3. I don’t know… it’s kind of been at this level for a while. It really does make you wonder why any sane person would knowingly subject themselves to this by running for office. It’s pretty much all like this these days; and frequently, the most vicious attacks come from inside one’s own party.

Dog – you hit the nail on the head. The sad reality is that personal destruction politics is not unique to either party, or even a recent invention. Politics takes an unbelievebly thick skin to participate, which is why so many who run for office are self-centered assholes who think the world revolves around them, and anything that advances their carrer is accepatble. It almost requires such a mindset to put yourself though the process.

That said, this is especially low and slimy, and at least there is a strong chance that this will backfire, as elecorates in the past have rejected candidates for crossing that undefinable line.

If not, and he is elected, then who is to be blamed for campaigning like this? In the world of politics, whatever works is good, whatever doesn’t is bad.

As someone born and raised in PA (although I’m no longer a resident) I would like to apologized for the state I grew up in. The people who live there are really not as bad as their representatives. They just seem to be stuck with an exceptionally embarrassing crop lately. Hopefully things will change in november.

he didn’t mention that his own daughter made a million dollars a year lobbying HIM on behalf of Russian Corporations.

  8. Dennis Raines says:

Yeah…. moonie… That just creeps me out.

I love the fact he’s standing next to a picture him and Qadhafi, and the thought of “maybe this isn’t a good idea” never hit him. But then agin: 5 year olds with cancer….

    No chit LOL.

One thing it got us thinking about was hippiedom and the extent to which remnants of that survive. One of our students grew up in a series of communes. Are there any communes still around?
