There is a rapidly growing movement to fix Congress…. GOOOH. Get out of Our House. It is a non partisan common sense method to select candidates for Congress. The GOOOH mission is to completely replace congress's corrupt politicians with citizens. Citizens who public state and agree to adhere to their positions for two years. If they vote for a bill against thier stated position they agree to resign. It takes over $1 million to run for congress. How can you raise this money and not start down the road to corruption? GOOOH will completely fund their candidates thus removing special interests and power brokers form the process. GOOOH is not about reps vs dems, libs vs conservatives, red vs blues, rich vs poor it is about giving our government back to the citizens. http://www.goooh.com

I love the idea. I'm not real familiar with them so thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Sounds interesting. Perhaps government financed campaigns could be easier to start down this path.

I have spent a lot of time debating with people about the GOOOH process and it's essential elements of universal access, low cost to enter, no special interests and candidate transparency appeals to people from both sides of the aisle regardless of income or age. By focusing only on the US House of Representatives, a movement by the people will add fresh voices to the many debates.

If we're going to do that, we could save even more money by simply assigning them lifetime positions. Incumbents love the idea of government campaign finance because they get media attention for free, but their opponents have to pay for it.

  9. Father_Time says:

    Exactly!

Unfortunately conservatives are dead set against it. They opposed it vehemently more than decade ago when it was last brought up by the Democrats.

Term limits would ease them out over time. I don't know how, and it would be opposed vehemently by BOTH parties (they could finally agree against something), but some kind of system (honestly run, ahem) to at least temper the corporate, union and other big “contributors” to campaigns for new candidates and incumbents. I know it is impractical as incumbents (think O) have lots of free publicity. Oh, and I think this stupid idea should be coupled with another stupid idea: mandatory voting at the congressperson and above level.

Term limits won't work Duck. They'll just vote themselves pay raises much more often.
