Global Cooperation: Gone Like a ‘Mirage’ – Liberation, France

French disappointment over the Copenhagen Climate Talks is palpable today, judging by this pair of articles from the country.

According to Liberation’s Laurent Joffrin, the talks put paid to the idea that real global governance was imminent:

“One must make the bitter observation: when it came to rescuing the banking system, cooperation was determined and effective. Apparently, it’s much easier to save the financial world than it is to save the planet. . … The outcome of the summit will leave the citizens of a threatened world cruelly disappointed. The global cooperation we all dreamed of, without believing in it too much, is once again fading like a mirage. Next time, perhaps …”

Meanwhile, Le Monde’s editorial, headlined Copenhagen Climate Talks: ‘Failure and Disappointment’, says in part:

“Europe was marginalized by a coalition that is a testament to the distribution of political power in today’s world: the United States, China, India, Brazil and South Africa. … In today’s world, when it comes to questions of the magnitude of the climate, if there’s not a preliminary agreement between China and the United States – the famous G2 – nothing significant is going to happen. Even less so, if it falls to 192 nations to decide under an unworkable and inappropriate U.N. procedure like the astonishing free-for-all that just ended in Copenhagen. ”

It's also too bad that the country with 80% of its electricity generated by nuclear power, can't more effectively spread the word. Let them eat oil.

  2. DLS says:

They're sound about nukes, but this wasn't about serious energy policy — this was about Copenhagen, and its related leftist politics, not about serious energy policy or science or anything else serious (other than some of the consequences if policy decisions had taken these scummy politics seriously, that is).
