You left out the making-everybody-currently-here-illegally-legal part. Or the guaranteed minimum income.

Nice rant Marc. Really it's a shame there wasn't enough wit, conscience and backbone to go the single payer route back when there was less polarization and a tad more common sense in Washington than there is now. But in 2009 we can't even get a meager public option. Much of the civilized world must be viewing us as disfunctional in the extreme, not just because of our weird economy and and dumbed down culture, but also because of our seeming inability to accomplish anything worthwhile through the legislative process. It's a national disgrace in my opinion.

That the full weight of health care would be dumped into the lap of a program already on its way to bankruptcy? That such a dramatic increase in cost unmatched by revenue would probably break the debt ceiling in under a year? That most Americans would probably see such an action as utterly irresponsible and hold the Democrats responsible for the chaos, bankruptcies, and disruption of health care it would cause?

But by all means have a Merry Christmas. It sounds like you are well on your way to that goal when you wrote this

“This short and sweeping legislation would not immediately address any costs considerations but it would solve one-half the problem – the need for universal coverage. The issue of cost containment for the entire U.S. healthcare industry would be greatly simplified. With Medicare-for-All in place, then HHS would only need to concentrate on controlling healthcare expenses from the powerful position of being the single national entity that really has the negotiating power to dictate all healthcare pricing. The President himself said if he were starting over he’d favor the single-payer public option. In a sense, we are starting over because working within the current system is no longer possible.”

I am in favor of single payer in theory as it makes the most logical sense, however our establishment is so broken that if we did it now it'd just bring down the government (or a complete collapse in health care) instead of leading to substantive reform.
