Hosting Ahmadinejad Diminished Brazil’s Standing in the World: Folha, Brazil

Much to the consternation of Brazilian Jews and many of Brazil’s Western allies, Brazilian President Lula has been hosting the much-reviled Iranian President Ahmadinejad according to the theory that he’ll be able to get his holocaust-denying counterpart to change his nation’s nuclear course.

According to this article by Sergio Malbergier of Brazil’s Folha newspaper, “Lula’s deranged foreign policy advisers lied by saying that Washington supported his mediation with Iran” and furthermore, he has outraged the “tens of thousands of Jewish Brazilians and millions of Brazilians of other faiths who deplore the atrocities of the Nazis and those of the Iranian Islamic theocracy against its own citizens.”

For Folha, discussing his family members that were murdered during the Holocaust, Malbergier writes in part:

“It’s painful to imagine what my grandmother (if she were alive) would feel watching the country that had given them refuge and where she was brought up with a joy she has passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, extending the red carpet to Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an international pariah that denies and promotes the denial of the Holocaust, a denial of the history of humanity and, on a more personal level, of my grandmother and her immense suffering. Hers, mine, and that of tens of thousands of Jewish Brazilians and millions of Brazilians of other faiths who deplore the atrocities of the Nazis and those of the Iranian Islamic theocracy against its own citizens.

“The pariah of Tehran is barred from Western capitals that practice responsible foreign policy due to his extensive criminal record of torturing and killing hundreds of his regime’s opponents; because he was the winner of a contested election (probably stolen) in which opposition protests were repressed with bullets and which Lula irresponsibly likened to a battle between rival fans; his promotion of international terrorism; and his bloody oppression of religious minorities; his persecution of homosexuals (executed in public plazas) and of political parties, especially those from the left.

“Actually, the negotiations with Iran that Lula is calling for began the day Obama took over at the White House. The talks, led by the U.S., China, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and Germany, are going nowhere, precisely because Tehran wants The Bomb – and Lula and Itamaraty [Brazil's ministry of Foreign Affairs] just pretend not to notice.

“By receiving Ahmadinejad, Lula stained Brazil and made me embarrassed to be Brazilian.”

Brazil – Folha – Original Article (Portuguese)

My great-grandfather, concerned about anti-Semitism and poverty, left his small village in southern Poland on his way to America at the beginning of the last century. Like many of his countrymen, he found a job in New York – at a garment factory. Religious Jews, however, couldn’t accept working on Saturdays, which is the day of rest in Judaism, so he returned to Poland.

    Stop with the Israeli propaganda..........
  • Please understand spirasol,

We translate and post foreign-language articles that involve the United States - plain and simple. Furthermore, over recent years the author of this article, Sérgio Malbergier, has written on a variety of topics that have never touched on Judaism or Israel. So the odds on this being 'Israeli Propaganda' are extremely low. More likely, the man simply finds Ahmadinejad to be offensive, which is by no means an exclusively Israeli preoccupation. I would note, however, that if you'd like to see real propaganda, we have also posted the Iranian government write-thru on Ahmadinejad's visit to Brazil: http://worldmeets.us/kayhan000022.shtml

I'm not jewish so don't get your panties in a bunch. Just wanted to point out that being supportive of a regime accused of an ethnic crime right next door in Argentina ain't too cool.

"Argentina expressed outrage over Iran's nomination of a man wanted in connection with a 1994 Buenos Aires bombing that killed 85 people as the next defense minister.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad tapping Ahmad Vahidi for the post is "an affront to Argentine justice and the victims of the terrorist attack" on the Jewish community center, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement."

William, what I meant and what I get tired of, is reading of Jews banding together to express outrage at Ahmadinejad, but I have seen him myself on American Television and his answers while cagey, are more complicated and nuanced. That Brasilian Jews don't like him is not news per say. If they deserve coverage for that then finding some Brasilians who are outraged at activities of the USA, or even better how Jews in Iran, -- What do they think about living under the crazy tyrant?

    Dear spirasol,

I think I understand your perspective. But keep in mind that there is an enormous amount of content with the views of groups banding together to criticize Jews and/or what they refer to as Zionists. We will continue to look for and translate all points of view. We just want to present Americans with what's being said in the international press about our nation and things that impinge upon it. I assure you that when we find content that defends or criticizes Ahmadinejad and it involves America - we will be quick to translate and post it.

Certainly we continue to work on getting a more varied diet of content out of Iran - and nothing would please me more than to find columns in Iranian newspapers describing Jewish displeasure with Ahmadinejad.

However, I would point out that we have had content about Iran's mistreatment of Christians and other minorities, such as this article from German headlined 'Christian Converts in Iran Face Increasing Hostility from Regime'
