Obama Will ‘Regret’ Failure to ‘Back Up’ Colombia: El Tiempo, Colombia

On behalf of all of the people of WORLDMEETS.US, I want to wish everyone who works on or visits the Moderate Voice a very Happy Thanksgiving. It’s a venue that would have to be invented if it didn’t already exist.

But Thanksgiving or no, world news rolls relentlessly on.

Somewhat overshadowed by other major news stories, the trouble between Venezuela and Colombia, exacerbated by the impending opening of seven U.S. military bases on Colombian territory – continues to brew. And according to this article by columnist Mauricio Vargas of Colombia’s El Tiempo, the feeling in Bogota is that President Obama isn’t doing much to help our staunchest south American ally deal with “psychopath” Hugo Chavez – nor is any of Colombia’s immediate neighbors.

For El Tiempo, Mauricio Vargas writes in part:

“Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez was completely in the right when he complained to the pompous Unasur [Union of South American Nations] for its silence in regard to the ongoing aggressions of Hugo Chavez. These aggressions are no longer just verbal, as demonstrated by the demolition of two pedestrian bridges on the [Colombia-Venezuela] border, and the indifference of the Chavez regime over the murders, on their own land, of a group of humble Colombians.”

“[Brazil President] Lula is silent. [Chilean President] Mrs. Bachelet, who has declared how worried she is about U.S. use of Colombian military bases, has also turned a blind eye. [Argentine President] Mrs. Fernandez de Kirchner, forget about it, but of course she has a briefcase with $800,000 that Chavez sent her to justify himself. This is a cowardly and indignant silence. It is the silence of the many that prevailed when the Nazis carted away the Jews to concentration camps. This passivity later cost the indifferent dearly, because the Nazis eventually came for them as well. If this region allows Chavez to behave this way toward Colombia, its leaders must be aware that the psychopath’s fury will eventually turn against them.

“What can be said about the administration of Barack Obama, who seems so comfortable in his silence. One day he’ll regret not managing to back up his only genuine ally in the region, which hasn’t been bought off by Chavez’ petrodollars, like ousted Manuel Zelaya and many others, and has extradited hundreds of drug traffickers and substantially reduced the production and exportation of cocaine so that less white powder reaches the noses of its addicts.”

Colombia – El Tiempo – Original Article (Spanish)

Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez was completely in the right when he complained to the pompous Unasur [Union of South American Nations] for its silence in regard to the ongoing aggressions of Hugo Chavez. These aggressions are no longer just verbal, as demonstrated by the demolition of two pedestrian bridges on the [Colombia-Venezuela] border, and the indifference of the Chavez regime over the murders, on their own land, of a group of humble Colombians. The fact of the matter is that a founding member and president of Unasur threatened a neighbor with war and carried out actions worthy of a terrorist organization hasn’t warranted a single comment from Unasur as an institution, nor from the governments that comprise it.

What do you people want us to do? You blame President Obama, but you are addressing the American people! We are already at war and increasing our troop strength in Afghanistan. We still have troops in Iraq. We are going bankrupt. We have 10% unemployment and climbing. We are facing off nuclear North Korean. We may be at war with a another new nuclear power, Iran, soon. We are trying to make peace between Israel and the Palestinians, the Pakistanis and the Indians, as we fight terror clandestinely around the world. One wonders, were the hell has Columbia been during all of OUR trials and tribulations???

Why don’t you go Ask Spain? They are not doing anything at the moment.

The ink isn't dry yet on the agreement between USA/Columbia to Create 7-10 military bases in Columbia. IS THIS NOT SUPPORT ENOUGH? Oh They want us to attack Venezuela? Spank Chavez, heh? You want to start the drumbeat for another military action do you?

You know as best as I can tell, the majority of Latin American countries side with Chavez, coincidentally also with Zelaya. They do not want to see the American military in South America. It is Columbia's behavior that is in question here, not Venezuela. If I wasn't so lazy I would go do a little research to prove it.

Yeah, but we could start a draft and put at least half of those lazy unemployed people in the military, buy a bunch of AK47 on the black market and march all those new soldiers down to Colombia to protect it from the evil Chavez...

This plan will remove a couple of million AK47 of the Black Market, the Marching down to Colombia will give our little brothers down in Central America more reasons to fear us, and it will get thenew American Troops to lose all their extra fat and get in fighting shape and if a few die on the way down think of all the money we will have saved on Social Security and Medicare.

At least 3 problems solved in one shot...
Removed AK47 from the black market.
    Reduced Unemployment.
Reduced the Obesity rate of Americans.

The world does indeed roll on...and not in as haphazard a fashion as it first appears. There is a concerted effort to bleed the US bull down financially as he struggles to get back on his feet.

Russia lurks curiously behind it all. China is the Bear's front man. And the gig is to tire the bull until the final gaff can be sunk in our jugular.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Russia was floating around the Gulf of Mexico not too long ago. Maybe just as bait. Fear works to provoke something that never should be acted on. Mark my words that this skirmish heating up in that region is just another diversion. If the US wants to survive as a nation, she needs to pull in her resources, batten down the hatches and lay low...come hell or high water abroad.

The thing about the russians is this. The minute I heard they decided to dismantle the iron curtain, I knew they were up to something. Call it paranoia, call it being a child of the Cold War. Call it whatever you like but one thing I've learned about Russia is that she is very very proud. And like a woman she has learned to lie in wait for her opportunity to exact revenge instead of punching directly in the nose at every provocation.

There. I laid it out on the table. Remember the bullfight and every gaff. Each one alone will not bring down the bull; but for some reason I feel like I've been sitting in a slow-motion bullfight and the gaffs have made the bull very weak at the knees. That we are beholden to China...well we walked right into that one didn't we? *rolls eyes*

"buy a bunch of AK47 on the black market"

Why not buy them from Baby Huey, who plans to be the region's arms seller and has been setting up one or more Kalashnikov factories to build and supply AK-47s to all his buddies there in the region?

(Those factories are begging for visits by US cruise missiles if a single US citizen is harmed or threatened.)

Sounds like a plan, it'll save our brave troops from having to carry all that weaponry through Central America...

So by your logic, any factory used to produce Drones and other war material used by the US in Afghanistan are legitimate targets for a nice Jihadi truck bomb no matter where they are located or how many civilians are working in them. Good to know, after all what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Mr. Father_Time asks where was Colombia (not ColUmbia, please) during all the US trials and tribulations. Well, let me tell you that Colombia was one of very few Latin American countries whose diplomats were defending you in the United Nations when the Irak invasion was launched; and whose soldiers and policemen are being killed while fighing the drug traffickers (aka known as communist "guerrillas") whose arms you finance with your insatiable appetite for cocaine, and that Chavez actively supports.

I am a supporter of Columbia, but the move by Uribe to extend his presidency is worrisome and wrong.
