Except the name calling is what’s wrecking American politics. If liberals call conservative wingnuts then they shouldn’t complain about the names conservatives call them. Wouldn’t it be nice if for a change people focus on the ideas people are advocating rather than going on the personal attack?
YES! K.G.you have it right. What moderates need to do is raise the level of debate to one of substance and not childish name calling. In other words if you want to talk politics at the adults table there are certain expectations of adult behavior. Good for you.
Republican seems to mean neo-conservative now, and that ain’t Conservative as far as the definition go’s. Big government geared towards corporate welfare is, was, and never will be conservative. Nation building, and meddling in foreign governments going’s on is, was, and never will be Conservative. Depleating the environment, and stripmining the land of it’s natural wealth is, was….oh you get it.
Right now the Republican party has lost it’s way. The subversion started in 1964 with Goldwater, but got hijacked by Liberals pissed off over Vietnam, and were pro-war, and pro-corporate. They infested themselves into the party during Nixon’s terms, and saw their savior in action during 1980-88. Finally realizing the dream in 2000, thus making Conservatism something of a tag word rather than an ideology or practice.
Give me TR,Eisenhowser, hell even Ford, but take Nixon,Regan, and most definately Bush2 to the trash bin, and seal that sucker tight.
Conservative does not have one meaning, just as liberal doesn’t. There are process conservatives, traditionalist conservatives, conservatives of doubt (skeptics), utopian conservatives, neo-conservatives, paleo-conservatives, racist conservatives, anti-Semitic conservatives, business conservatives, deficit hawk conservatives, small government conservatives, Christian conservatives, Islamic conservatives, Likudnik conservatives, Jewish conservatives, colorblind conservatives, military conservatives, imperialist conservatives, isolationist conservatives, radical conservatives, conservative conservatives, moderate conservatives, movement conservatives, New Right conservatives, South Park conservatives, Wal-Mart conservatives, gun rights conservatives, militia conservatives, national security mom conservatives, big government conservatives, tax cut conservatives, cultural conservatives, libertarian conservatives, elitist conservatives, conservative feminists, conservative anti-feminists, anti-elitist conservatives, populist conservatives… Well, you get the picture.
How about fake conservatives? I don’t care for “modern” liberals either. When I think conservative, or liberal my thoughts go to the term “classic”, not the modern versions. Anything outside of the true versions, as the character from the Austin Powers movies Fat Bastard would say is “crap!”
wingnut is a better term than conservative.

Well, back to the subject for a moment.

A conservative sticks to principals. A Republican follows the party.
